  • Engine not revving

Hey people, I have an auto 2001 kzte with 320km on it. When I try to start moving the car does not go over about 20km/h. It changes gears to second but doesn't accelerate at all. It does the same in reverse. The engine will not rev in neutral either. This happened once before but I put it down to cold weather. I'm on the Sunshine Coast. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, TIA.

Update: I moved the car from my inclined driveway to the level road and it ran perfectly again 3 hours later. What could be causing this, oil level sensors?

Hmm sounds like "limp mode" but I would have thought you would have to clear DTC codes in order to remove limp mode. Based on your 2nd post, I would have guessed low automatic trans fluid but it's a manual so.... Lemme have a flick through the workshop manual and see it it says anything in there... I'll be back...

        According to the manual:

        1. Blocked air cleaner element; clean and/or renew if neccessary

        2. Incorrectly adjusted throttle cable (don't think thats the problem...)

        3. Low fuel rail pressure: Check the fuel pressure. If low, renew fuel filter and check the lines for blockages. Check the fuel pressure regulator.

        4. Water in the fuel: Drain the fuel from the system and renew fuel filter.

        5. Exhaust System Blockage: check the exhaust system for damage and remove any restrictions (not likely)

        6. Faulty air flow sensor: clean or replace

Limp mode would typically give you a light on the dash.

When did you last replace the fuel filter? Thats a cheap and easy fix to try first. I've solved seeminlgy expensive problems where multiple fuel injection specialists have told me I need a new fuel injector pump (on two different diesels now) simply by replacing the fuel filter!

The other thing... go to Supercheap Auto or your nearest auto shop, buy a can of MAF sensor cleaner and clean your MAF sensor. This is good to do every now and then as part of regular maintainence. MAF sensor is the one screwed into the intercooler pipe that drops down into the throttle body on the passenger side of the engine. Should have a plug with two wires coming out of it. It's easy to remove but is a very sensitive sensor so be careful with handling it not to drop it and only use the MAF sensor spray to clean it. Do NOT use anything else as any residue left on the sensor diode will effect your cars performance. The MAF sensor is a very senstive diode type thing that is protected in a brass frame. You'll see what I mean when you pull it out.

See how ya go with that!

It's an auto, I don't get any engine lights on the dash. The transmission fluid level is actually high atm, unless the incline is making it read low? Just been for a service about 1000km ago, cleaned air filter out. It could be the fuel filter that needs replacing, where is it located? The MAF sensor clean is a good suggestion as well.

Fuel filter underneath the fuel primer housing in the back corner of the engine bay - passenger side. It should have a round black primer on the top. Remove the 2 x 12mm nuts either side of the primer to release it from the bracket to gain better accessto the fuel filter underneath. (no need to remove the black hoses).

Heres a video explaining the process. It's a pretty easy job. Make sure you have a few rags handy especially in the engine bay as some diesel will come out during the process but not silly amounts. Be sure to fill the new fuel filter with diesel before you install it. What I do is use the water drain tap that comes out the bottom of the filter on a length of black hose, hand pump out any water into an old container. Throw it out and then use the same hose to fill the new fuel filter. Unless of course you have a jerry can with some diesel handy, then ignore that step. Anyways, you'll see how it works.

Thanks very much for your help mate, appreciated. I'll take a look at replacing the fuel filter and try the MAF sensor spray as well.
