I know a bit late but the 2.7 engine is a great motor. I had a 96 2.7 a few years back and was the best 4by I've had and I've had every concievable brand model nearly. I used this one offroad every second weekend and the only offroad + mods it had were BFG A/T's and a 4 inch lift. No lockers etc and this little engine took me everywhere I wanted to go. It seemed to have high torque, especially off the mark. I used to tow an 18ft poptop with it also and did it easily with exception of hills and strong headwinds. I was getting 11 1/2 litres/ 100km (Average) and 15 1/2 towing my van. Why did I sell it then you may ask? because I was an idiot!. I would have it back tomorrow if I could.

Agreed, the 2.7 is a widely underestimated engine. Excellent 4 cylinder, has more than enough to hold its own (at least on my 3 door 90 series) and is as reliable as they come. I do miss the power the 5VZ of my old 95 series had but i have absolutely no complaints on this little engine.
By the way, fuel consumption is awesome, i havent properly measured it yet but on highways I can get upwards of 500km on a single 90 liter tank without having the light come on. I will measure it on my next long trip.
