  • Fast idle when hot or cold and solution

    It all started about 2 weeks ago, the prado started normaly and was idling at about 1500 initialy while it was cold arter traveling a couple of km i noticed that the idle had increased to about 2000 rpm. I gave it a small kick on the accelerator pedal and the rpm dropped to 1100, not the usual 750 rpm. Next set of lights same thing happened. When I had time to look at the problem I found the cruise control and the accelerator linkage had a small gap between them, by pressing on the linkage the idle returned to 750 rpm. Initialy thought it may have been the throttle position sensor TPS so again when I had time I removed the TPS, the linkage still was being held open. Turns out the throttle opening valve which is located just to the left and slightly lower than the throttle body opening has jammed and is holding the idle at the increased speed. I also checked that the vac line that operates the valve did in fact have vac present.

    This valve looks to me to be a method of opening the throttle slightly when the manifold vac increases to a too high level, like when decending steep declines with the engine reving at 3000 rpm and the throttle closed.
    Hope this helps somone because it also baffled my normal motor mechanic!!!!

    Not familiar with your specific model, but some cars have a damper that
    slows the closing of the throttle for pollution reasons.

    Other vales might be idle up for airconditioning?

      It's not the dampener it's on the other side of the throttle body at around the same height as the dampener and it has a 4mm hose that connects to the manifold towards the back where the inlet manifold folds back on itself. And it is only operated by vac in the manifold. There is no electrical connection whatsoever. The engine is a 3.4 manual.

        Sounds like a device that keeps the fuel up under high vacuum then, probably
        to do with the anti pollution requirements.

          Verified at Toyota today that the "throttle opening valve" stops the manifold vacum from exceeding safe limits.

                  Just saw the post now. I didn't buy a new one as they were about $200 from memory...... I ended up purchasing a second hand throttle body complete from the wreckers for $30 or there abouts, I just had to make sure that the unit was the same.

                  I also found a small hole in the vac line that was worn through from a hose rubbing on the vac hose. This problem occurred seemingly randomly until I removed the vac hose. When I fitted the replacement valve I must have moved the other hose and the problem disappeared only to appear months later. It was found after about 5 minutes of looking though as I started with the valve. Ken.
