  • Exhaust system for 90 series 3.4ltr

I am wanting to upgrade my exhaust sytem on a 2002 parado 90 series 3.4ltr petrol. Currently I am wanting to fit the Pacemaker extractors though am having trouble finding a bolt on exhaust system to suit (of the shelf so to speak) i.e the redback ones, and like most company's they only seem to offer them for deisel models.
Does anyone know what systems are available for this model?
Or is having an exhaust workshop custom bend one up to suit the only option?
The pacemaker website says it suits an OE exhaust system???? Does anyone know what this refers to?
Any advice from people who have been down this road would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

As you've probably seen online the pacemaker replaces the original extractors up to (including) the Y junction. From there you can connect it directly to the original 2 1/4" pipe / mufflers. They improve the 2,700 rpm weak point, rpm climb and introduce a deeper but subtle tone to the sound.

You won't gain anything from upgrading the rest of the system except lots of noise, and you'd have to pay for custom one. I did this with mine and found it to be a total waste of money even with the supercharger. So I'd recommend just the pacemakers and then check/service (or remove) the main mufflers variable pressure valve, as it's likely to be seized up by now. It's at the rear of the main muffler - but prepare it repeatedly with penetrating fluids or the bolts will rip off when undoing.

Cheers for the reply Glen, Noise is the last thing I want to achieve, simply after better performance and economy. I do need to change over the cat and mufflers as they sound blocked up but it's great to now know a full system is money thrown away. I did see a factory toyota cat back system on ebay for about $300-$400 a few weeks ago it may pay for me to replace the lot and install the pacemakers. I did look at a few other brands of extractor but I believe the pacemakers are the only mandrel bent ones.

AB's 97, i am just around the corner from performance exhaust and these guys were the first place I went to inquire..... They quoted for pacemaker extractors w/high flow cat and redback system with heavy duty muffler about $1850, What I could not understand was that Redback DO NOT make a system to suit this model (other places told me there was no redback available) so who knows what PE quoted on? Were you happy with them? Did your system make a difference as opposed to the standard one. Their reputation is a bit worrying to me, I also wanted to get the twin system on my xr8 done and they wanted to change it to a single and refused to keep it a twin system, because "it's too hard, and will bottom out" was their exact words, Although the factory system is a twin. Also my boss had his car done with them and has had to have them modify and change the system to get rid of an awful drone (V8 Auto) which every time they tried something to make good, they turned around and said "we need more money". I reluctant to go there now. Having said this I have heard some good stories too...

Brissy......For almost same price you can get the Pacemakers, is there a reason your leaning toward these others? (out of curiosity)

I fitted Pacemakers to the standard system and replaced the main muffler as it had a loose baffle, nice note at low rpm and fairly bellows at the top end.
The blower whine and exhaust bellow go hand in hand .....

If the exhaust shop is quoting a cat ask them why as our model does not have them.

Ahh, on the subject of cats...

We've discussed this on PP before and came to the conclusion that 90's never had cats.

              http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-oxygen-sensor

However I still have suspicions. It might be that the cats were built inline between the extractors and y junction. Looking at the photo linked above we can see it's not simple pipes, something is there. So, if installing new extractors have a good look at what you're removing, it might be inline cats.

However, even if Toyota fitted them on later models just to get them into the country (cats legally required 2000+ onwards), they didn't bother to include O2 sensors. Probably because it would require ECU and wiring harness changes. I'm certain no AUS 90 has an O2 sensor (I've been over my 2001 ecu and wiring diagrams several times), and without this, the cat will have limited effect especially over the long term. O2's are meant to send air/fuel information back to the ECU, so it can adjust air/fuel mixture, improving economy and preventing lean or rich conditions. Without this, our Prados ECU defaults to a rich condition, which deposits fuel in the cats, leading to cat overheating and failure. So, install a new cat and you may find it burned out months later... another way to waste money...

I'll be watching this thread as i'm about to replace my exhaust. Never though of extractors as mine feels sluggish around the 3k rpm range. Will extractors fix this???

Also being a mechanic i rang repco and they can get mid and rear sections bolt on. Just an idea wasn't too badly priced either.

You don't by chance have a video of this? Toying with doing the same as I reckon the standard pipe is big enough but extractors and a nice muffler would do the trick.

                  Cheers,

Hi, pacemaker are in the process of making a exhaust for the 90 series.
It will have an 18” long centre muffler, 11” wide and 4” deep and a 4” or 6” round resonator at the back, 2 1/2" right through.

I didn't need a cat because my model doesn't have one so that saved me about $600-800 from memory and they just used the one heavy duty muffler. I made them take the price down still because I said I was shopping around. With regards to the extractors not too sure what the go is there mince clearly have Red Back written on them. Pretty sure Genie stuff comes out of the same factory so maybe there genie with red back tagged on them not sure...
But performance wise yeh like glen said takes away the weak points in the rpm and flows much better. And sounds like a v8 tone when idling but you don't get much noise when accelerating unless you plant the rpms through the roof....I was even thinking to go back to them to remove the HD muffler for more noise and maybe just go with the straight through...I'll probs do that when it's not my daily drive anymore.
And I personally haven't had any issues with the place I got it down... Hope this helps.
