last night i had a split in my radiator and steam came out everywhere lucky i was only 5 mins from home and nothing over heated. today went searching for a new radiator but ran out of luck because it being sunday. anyways i purchased some rapid fix to get me through the next few days till i can get the radiator replaced. i sealed up the crack in the head of the radiator and filled it with water. took it for a test drive and found it coughing and sputtering all over the place and i think not as much power as it usually has. is this just a lack of compression in the radiator or could some damage have happened? nothing over heated just a big crack in the top of the radiator.

If you loose coolant out of the system and the temperature sender unit is no longer in contact with the coolant your gauge won't read hot, but you can still cook your engine, which unfortunately sounds like what you have done. Likely a head gasket or cracked head,or worse.
Sorry no good news I'm afraid.
