  • Plugs and leads

    I got a 1998 Prado manual
and I've noticed twice now that when I really stop down the power peddle it starts to miss fire quite bad the first time it did it I pulled over and as I was idling it fixed itself up and was all good but today it did the same thing but didn't fix itself up so I'm thinking should I change the spark plugs and leads the engine has don't around the 200 thousand mark if so any one care to explain how to go about this I've never had to change plugs or leads before (not very mechanicaly minded)
    Cheers

Which engine? for the 5vz-fe (3.4):

It's pretty easy - just remove the air intake from the throttle and try and make room to get to the driver's side valve cover. You will need to remove a few hoses so it makes sense to photo beforehand and mark each one and where it connects. Unbolt each coil and pull off the plug, and untangle/remove the wire from the other side. Keep a note of which goes to which (i.e. 1 to 4 or whatever). Unbolt the plugs with a spark plug socket and extension and remove, replace and nip up a little, not too tight just enough to crush the plug gasket a little. Put the new coils on and bolt on, and then connect to the appropriate cylinder on the other side. Make sure you retain the little seperator pieces so you can space them nicely, and run the wires in the top of the timing cover.

      Yes 5vz-fe sorry
do you thing that would be what's causing this issue I've only bought the car a week ago and have the paperwork stating the engine change and has only done 200 thousand but I don't know what services have been like on it since the change over

Changed the coils and leads seemed to fix the misfire I think but a snapped bolt has me waiting for the machanic tomorrow hope he can fix it fml

Oh dear hopefully he'll sort it out for you! Mine had a very comprehensive service history from new (2000) to 2014 but then sketchy after that. They are pretty solid motors though. I change my oil every 6 months including filter and it's been fine - a few small oil leaks but nothing major. I use 15W-40 which is allowable for the climate here in brisbane.

It's worth cleaning the MAF (mass airflow sensor) as well as the throttle body and IAC (idle air control valve) if you haven't done so yet, as well as search for vacuum leaks. These bits could all cause misfire or poor running.

If you have 2 fuel tanks (main and sub) is it the same on both tanks? They are 2 independent systems.

Yeh the miss is still there on both tanks machanic came today got the snapped bolt out and put a new one in and the miss is still there he didn't have a scan tool that fit my plug so he told me his guess it seems like a electrical miss so either leads plugs or coils the coils and leads I changed to weren't new ones but the previous owner said there wasn't anything wrong with the coils or leads so he kept them as spairs so I'm thinking maybe just change out the plugs with news ones is still missing then I'll look at paying a auto electrician to scan it fml

You can scan it yourself with a paper clip. But if you have no engine light on then there will be no codes stored. These cars don't do OBD2 diagnostics like modern cars do! Do you have any yellow engine lights on?

No no light come on at all it's seems very strange went to do school drop off this morning and on the way into town was missing then as I was almost in town the miss seemed to disappear to the point I don't notice any misfire ATM seems very strange thinking I should still go ahead and get new spark plugs leads and coils and get them all changed up to newies to be safe can get leads on eBay for around $80 and a set of 3 could on eBay for $90 and set of plugs around 35-40 in store
but anyone know why it would miss like crazy then decide to stop missfireing and drive all sweet again? And should I trust the ebaybcheapies

Odd, but no light will mean no codes stored. I think I'd try and use new coils and wires if possible but there are other possible causes - the igniter and the MAF, as well as the fuel system. If you do go to a mechanic though try and find an old school one who has experience of these older pre obd2 engines.

When you start the car in the mornings does the car idle rough and some steam come out of the exhaust for a little while until everything’s warmed up & expanded?

This is the only way to scan and get codes - there's no other codes available in this car.

You can get a very basic serial data stream of an extremely limited set of parameters (temps, RPM and not much more), see here:

Something I have recently noticed is that when this miss comes back if I clutch in and give it acouple of big revs or if I'm in nutrell and give it acouple if big revs the miss seems to go straight away (well back to bearly noticable?) I've put in a bottle of injecter cleaner (the twin pack from big W) one bottle in the reserve tank (the tank in currently using and when ibfill up next I'll put the other bottle threw the main tank not sure I'm not machanic but I'm Thinking maybe I should look at getting the fuel filter changed also ??

Hey mate before you replace your sparks and coils, try one more thing: Disconnect the mass air flow sensor and see how it goes (the check engine lamp will come on when its's disconencted, but you can ignore that for a bit). if the backfire goes away, your MAF is f*cked and you need to replace it (should cost around $60 -80 and takes three minutes).

I had a similar problem and was about to order new plugs coils and wires before I gave it a shot. It's like driving a new car.

All good turns out one lead was not correctly clicked on to the coil causing it to rattle on and off about causing it to randomly miss and backfire I've now got all leads clicked in correctly and have had no miss or backfire since
