  • Leaky Rocker Covers? (5VZ-FE)

Hi All - I have removed the rocker covers to deal with a small oil leak either side and to replace seals.

I found no other issues such as water in oil etc.

I have noticed green coolant leaking after washing the covers and degreasing them, is leaking out inside the cover.

When I blow into on inlet on top of the rocker where the coolant hose attaches, one of the covers blows like a wood instrument
and the other stops blowing after a few seconds and becomes difficult.

I raise the concern as I do not want water leaking into the engine when I reseal.

Are the rockers broken? despite not showing any concerning behavior prior to being removed.

    Cheers

I did my rocker cover gaskets last year. I don't remember any coolant hoses being involved other than the on the throttle body. There was a PCV hose connection on the front end of the driver's side cover (RHD) and I think this made a noise when I blew through with an air line.

My only tip is that if you plan to re-use the plastic half-moons put lots of RTV sealant around them, mine leaked and I had to do the whole job again.

In the UK we seem to prefer Toyota red coolant to the green stuff.

I did replace the rocker cover seals on both sides back in January as I’d discovered a oil leak and after inspection all the bolts were loose, presumably because the rubber had compressed causing the leak.
however, no hoses containing coolant had to be touched to do the job.

The rocker cover bolts on the V6 motor like to loosen up over time - its something to do with the harmonics of the motor. Just re-tighten the bolts and check them annually. Its not too difficult to replace the cover gaskets, and eventually this will have to be done. My V6 has done over 400k so far on the original cover gaskets, the bolts have been re-tightened 4 times so far. Your experience may differ

I did rocker cover gaskets at 240k km then agian at 280 when I did the timing belt Ive never stopped a 5vz-fe from leakng at the back of the rocker covers by tightening the bolts changing some of the rubbers on the bolts may help with out removing the rocker cover I did that to hide the gasket leaking to get a roadworthy once, It should have pink coolant in it.
