  • Major service in Brisbane

    Hi,
My 2000 V6 Kimberley is due for it's 150k service. My local 4wd mechanic has retired and now I'm at a loss. The car has been so good with regular servicing I really don't want to trust the 150k service to someone who has no idea about Prados.

I have a Toyota dealer who services the company Aurion (because it doesn't cost me anything) but wouldn't let them near the Prado after some of the shoddy work they've done.

To make matters worse I'm planning to do the Cape trip next year so I want this one done right. (obviously will be another before then but hopefully that will be minor)

    So a couple of questions;

Any recommendations for a mechanic who knows their way around Prados in Brisbane or even SE Qld?
Should I have them looking specifically at anything else (water pump etc..) or leave that until closer to the trip?

    Thanks for any advice.
    Steve O

Edit - I've hunted around the forums a bit more and seen that the 160k is also a fairly major service. The car is actually sitting on 158k at the moment. Any advantage in getting much of the 160k done at the same time?
    Sorry, but I'm mechanically challenged.

    Re: Major service in Brisbane

    Hey Steve,

it is the age old question isnt it, who is reliable?

mate, for what it's worth, i have a guy in Nambour that i would trust with my life. i now have him servicing my dedicated LPG falcon (company car) because others including factory stuffed it big time. when i bought my 2000 prado 2 years ago, i gave it to him to "go over it" and installed a dual fuel lpg system. now no one else looks after my vehicles. his name is Gaven Johnson Mechanical, Price St Nambour Ph 5476 0733.

he is also a member, maybe a board postion holder of NthCoast 4x4 club, owns and runs a patrol himself (yeh i know !!!) so he knows what its all about

    regards Tony

You would just go straight for the 160k service, and only do any extra items from the 150k services that aren't in the 160.
If you want a good reliable mechanic on the south side of brizzy, try On Track 4WD Centre at Moss Street Slacks Creek.

        Hi

my local Toyota dealer seems to put the apprentices on the older vehicles and I have to take my 1999 Snowy GXL back several times with issues after regular servicing. Does anyone have a recent recommendation for Prado 90 servicing? I am on the west side of Brisbane.

                I have just 2 words - TIMING BELT. It's due at 150,000.

Yes the 160,000 service is an everything service, get your wallet out mate. All diffs and gearbox, spark plugs, all filters, coolant, the lot.
Let them know you plan to go to the Cape and consider extra heavy duty oil in the diffs and gearbox.

I also use the heavy duty tractor extreme pressure grease in the driveshaft joints and it makes everything much smoother. well worth the effort.

You really want the oils done by a proper 4WD place or at least someone that will listen to your requirements. The timing belt should be within the ability of most decent mechanics. Check your water pump while the timing belt is boing done, saves a lot of labour of you do the two at once. I did.

Here's a little pic of what went into mine at the 200,000 service - and you need to add gearbox oil to this,
and double the transfer case oil as it's a replace and not a top up.

Took me all day, a proper mechanic should be able to do it all in 4 hours with car on a hoist and all the right tools and stuff.
