  • LPG Conversion

Hi all I just had the v6 converted to LPG and I thought I post up some info and numbers for anyone who is interested.

*The conversion cost was $2300 and after the Government Rebate of $2000 it will have only set me back $300.

*What they did was remove the main tank and fit a 90L (72L usable) LPG tank in its place this utilises the normal fuel gauge and the filler is located behind the fuel flap (makes it a bit of a squeeze but still workable).

*Fuel efficiency of the Prado on Petrol (mainly around town driving) is about 15-16L/100km. Fuel efficiency of the Prado on LPG (mainly on the highway) has been about 20L/100km.

    Petrol 15(L) x $1.20 = $18 per 100km.

    LPG 20(L) x $0.50 = $10 per 100km.

(When I get some around town figures for LPG and once the system has been run in and re-tuned I will change them if need be)

So by my calculations it will take me less than 4000km (8 weeks) for the conversion to pay for itself and if I average 25000km a year it will be a saving of $2000pa or $38 per week (a very small amount of which may have to go to increased service costs).

    Other things worth mentioning.

*The LPG tank only has a range of about 350km (but you still keep your sub tank so all up you should still have a range of about 750km when you need it).

*The tank hangs down about 50mm lower than the petrol one did and so you do loose a little bit of your departure angle.

*There has been a small decrease in power but I intend to have the timing advanced to suit the higher octane of LPG which will mean a small increase in power from the LPG.

That seems very cheap for an LPG installation? Is it vapour injection or using a converter?

Harvey had one done locally and actually increased the RW power on LPG! That was in the 3 k region from what i understand though and was using vapour injection.
I think he ended up with about 17l/100 on LPG.

Yeah, that does sound very cheap! I've heard prices over $3000.

I'm thinking of getting it done too. I think I'll do a body lift first, to try to tuck the tank in as high as possible (and to try and fit 33" tyres).

That is the traditional converter not the vapour injection

Some of the prices i got were over 3k but the guy i went to seemed to know what he was talking about and wasnt inflating the prices because of the rebate
