  • Engine life, 2.7L 4-cyl

Hi, I'm new to Pradopoint, and planning to buy a secondhand 90 series Prado in the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately I'm a student, so my budget is limited to about 10-12K (AUD).

Just wondering if anyone knew what the life of the 2.7L 4-cylinder engines was. I have seen a number of these for sale, all around the low-mid 200,000km's. Most of them seem to be have used in the city only.

Any other suggestions for things to look out for when buying a used Prado would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking forward to joining to community of Prado owners.

    Cheers,

    -Al

Hi Al welcome to prado point

I have a 2.7l & have done 170000k's with no problems, not even an oil leak.

I generally average around 11.5l to the 100km
If towing it goes up to about 15l to the 100km

    Hope this helps.

i also have a 2.7 Prado and love it.
They have the same engine as a hilux and i know of plenty of hilux's with over 300,000 km's on them and no engine work. Mine has done 185,000 and going strong.
Oh and around town they go. I had a drag with a mate in a 3.4 auto Prado yesterday and up to 80km/h killed him!!!
If you can get one for around the money you have go for it.

          259,000 and still going strong...

Getting close to rolling over the 260k mark and still going strong. I use this vehicle in a tour business in the Middle East so it spends close to 50-60% of it's time off-road or on graded roads of questionable grade. The environment is very harsh and hard on other cars. The 1999 2.7L Prado has been a strong, comprehensive vehicle.

I do go through tires more than other people and the dash developed a "rattle" at around 140k but it is fairly negligible. The engine hasn't required any major service, but I have had it in for dealer service every 5k.

I second that, you must change the oil on these babies every 5,000 KM, it will save you lots of headaches. I take it to the dealer every 20,000 KM. Most Toyota engines are engineered right, so you should expect very little trouble with them, AS LONG AS YOU CHANGE THE OIL
