  • Replacing Charcoal Cannister with smaller one?

    Hey guys,

Finally got around to installing my dual battery tray yesterday. (3.4L V6 so it's on the passenger side rear)
Was a bit of fiddling around and moving brackets but got it in then went to deal with the charcoal cannister. Can't find anywhere where it'll phyiscally fit, was thinking up against the fan shroud at the front but because I got a larger starting battery it won't fit there.
Curiosity got the better of me so I opened up the bonnet of the girlfriends '97 Rav4 and the charcoal cannister on that looks to be the perfect size, about 2/3 of the size of the prado one. Only difference is it doesn't have the sensor on top.
So, question is, if I go and buy one similar to the Rav4's from a wrecker or something, and then just attach the sensor off my cannister, will it still all work? Will downsizing the cannister affect anything?

(p.s. did a search and couldn't find anything)

    Any input appreciated!

    G'day Xlr8,
Not sure about the smaller one but I relocated mine to the other side on the engine bay towards the back. Mounted it on the right hand gaurd. Can take a photo tomorrow if you like?

        Hi Rob,

The theory I believe, is due to the fuel capacity (160 odd litres) the Prados need a large charcoal cannister to "safely" absorb the fumes, therefore a smaller cannister shouldn't be installed. However after looking at the cannister size of the 120 series that thought goes out the window.

I myself have been running a smaller cannister relocated next to my air cleaner housing for over 2 years now with no problems.
If the cannister becomes "full" you get the excess overflow coming out into the left hand chassis rail of all places. I have not had that issue and living in Brisbane I would expect it to happen as I regularly leave my Prado with full tanks, to date no issues.

Just use as large a smaller cannister that you can (does that make sense lol)

          Thanks Lee,
I know what you mean by saying as large a small cannister as well!
Might give it a go, if worst comes to worst I can just sort a larger one out later.

Also does anyone know if they have to be mounted vertically? If not, might open up a little more space for me. Cheers!

              Thanks Paul.

Looking at my engine bay (dodgy picture below), I've got something in the way there Think it's the ABS?

I see what you mean. The ABS is an issue. Not sure if this can be disconnected or not and if so, how you go with insurance. I'm confident you are not the first to have this done so hopefully someone can help out.
                Cheers.

Thinking outside the box, will it fit between the grill and radiator or behind the front bumper or bull bar.

Surely there would be legal repercussions to consider if putting a smaller charcoal canister as it is part of the vehicle's emission control system. Relocating would be the safer option.

Crooza - good thinking! might check that out as there's bound to be some spare space around there somewhere.

Williade - I imagine so, hoping I can find a suitable place to relocate. It'd be fine if I hadn't put the bigger starting battery in!

                        Williade,

I think as long as the charcoal cannister functions the same as the replacement I don't believe it would be an legal issue.
If there is a legal issue with changing the cannister size you would find the same issue would apply when fitting long range tanks.

Remember the charcoal cannister is there to only hold fuel vapours for a short time before the engine "consumes" them. Maintaining functiionality is the key.

Hi Paul, Thanks for your pic on Canister Move.
I have ABS like (xlr8_87) - No you can't disconnect your ABS.

                          Paul,
                          (I have a 1999 Prado Grande VX - with ABS - V6)

What did you do with the drain pipe at the bottom of the canister?

Where did you run the pipe down to?
In the original position (passenger side), pipe goes into the chassis.

I am looking at putting mine in between the ABS & Air Filter box. I have unbolted the idle mix pot to the side. (will connect bracket to throttle cable bracket in front of ABS)
I can extent the pipes on top of canister and the cables for plug to other side.
I should be able to fabricate a bracket to hold the canister maybe with a large hose pipe clamp, and bolt back to the side.

Just unsure what to do with bottom pipe as it looks like a drain pipe.

I saw this post a while ago but couldn't reply as I was never a member.
I put a post 4x4 Earth back in 2012 about "Where to move the Carbon Canister". I found my old post updated the pic of my Aux battery install.
I did install the Piranha - Petrol V6 Battery tray - Part #BTPRA4C (Aux) tray and I just pushed the Carbon Canister in the corner and never moved it.

I need to replace my 65Ah (9 inch) battery as its dead, and I wanted to go to a 80 ah 10 inch battery if I can.
I have worked out if I move the Canister as I should have, there is just enough room to put a tray in to fit a 80 ah 10 inch battery.

Piranha Battery Tray 65ah 9 inch (Tray for non ABS) but I have ABS

I welded the existing canister bracket to the side of a steel battery tray that I installed in the LH rear space.

The canister is now crowded a bit closer to the motor but still clears everything.

Made a frame out of 20mm angle into which I dropped a battery tray from SCA. Welded the charcoal canister to the angle iron frame.

Thanks 96VZJ95. Well that sames on extending pipes and cables, kept all the same.
I got some hoses in the way so might be an option for me.
Was it a bit tight for changing spark plugs ? As it looks like it would be for me.

If you move the Carbon canister to drivers side.
What do you do with the drain pipe at the bottom of the canister?

Pic attached: Original drain pipe on passenger side - black plastic pipe going into chassis rail behind front wheel, rear of strut.

(to see it you need to take the little plastic panel off in wheel arch by rail & jack up car to get a good look.)

I had to clip mine back in, as I had to replace a rubber joining pipe.
You wouldn't normally have to do what I did. It just popped out on me.

At least I now know where the original pipe goes.

                              >> So do I do the same on the passenger side ?
