  • 90 Prado Diagnosis/OBDII

    hi guys
Is there an OBDII plug for diagnosis of the 90 series Prado?
There is a box marked 'DIAGNOSIS' in the engine bay, right by the intake manifold. Inside is an array of metal pins or something...not sure whats it for.
Then on the fuse box there is a fuse specifically marked as OBDII which is the modern diagnostic plug.
    Any help or ideas?

I would like to know about this as well.

There is also an OBDII connector under the dash on the drivers side near the center console.

I've tried a couple off OBDII units with no luck.

I believe the 90 series is not OBDII compliant.
It is either a Toyota system or a early OBD version, either way you cannot access engine data through the diagnostic port with a standard OBDII tool.

Wait hold up there JKAF ... would you be as kind enough to let me know exactly where this OBDII connector is?

        Thanks

If it is an odb connector it could be m-obd which you can communicate with the ecu using techstream and a cable (available on eBay for $20-$30.
The diagnostic port cables are available on eBay too I believe.

I would also be interested to know about this. From what I've seen before on forums I'm led to believe that the 90 is not OBDII compatible.

I'm wondering if Ades is on to something and some parameters can be monitored this way.

I have taken a couple of photos as to where the connector I think is an OBD one.
They were taken with my phone this morning so sorry about the quality.

The connector is under the dash on the drivers side above the foot rest towards the seat. It is tucked up above the plastic dash so you have to get right under to see it.

I have used a couple of OBD II cables trying to see if it will work and they fit no problem, but I get no data out.

i was working with this just the othewr week and with the help of a couple of very helpfull loal mechanics and the local toyota dealer i found this.
you can extract codes only. if you are using a scanner, you have to tell the scanner what type of vehicle it is exactly. you can find the same info by just bridging terminal 4 and 13 on the connector and reading the engine check light flashes on the dash. there is a post here some where about the code meanings or just google it. after weeks or reasearching this and knowing my way through the codes i was chasing, i rang my local toyota dealership service department and they said that any comunication with the ecu is one way with the exception of being able to extract codes only. you can then clear the codes by pulling the ecu fuse under the bonnet on the drivers side.
as for monitoring the perameters, say rpm or boost or any other engine function, it will not happen.
                hope this helps

Pity we can only read codes.
Do you know what the exact vehicle type we should enter on a scanner?

I have got the Techstream to work on my 99 surf with drive by wire. I can monitor all engine parameters, injection values map sensor, temps etc. However the EGR values never do anything for some reason..

Are you able to elaborate on this?

A newbee, I have just bought a yr 2000 Prado TX KZJ95R TD 1KZ-TE. It has the OBD socket under the dash. Your thread offered some light for getting data which is great, but are you able to confirm exactly what worked and what you use?

Been looking on ebay and the Techstream stuff seems to be cable and software

                      Any help would be great

Hi Simon. Yes, that's exactly the one that I bought. IN the end I had a lot of problems getting it to work on my win 7 64 bit, but there is a thread to help do that now. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/genera...-8-64-bit.html
It works great. I now just use the latest version of Tech stream and make a mod to an ini file. Do a search on techstream on the Toyota-4runner forums and you'll find heaps of stuff.
                      Cheers
                      Matt

If you have what looks like an OBDII plug in the footwell close to the steering column somewhere (it's not actually OBDII, it's MOBD) you will be able to use the techstream from ebay.

Have tried to get Toyota dealer workshop to read my system 03/2000 1KZ 3l diesel. All they get is bs and no codes. I have given up and live with the limp mode. Shut down and start up clears fault
