G,day Alll <
Looks who back from the Bush !!! 8)
well further news since I successfully did the D4D conversion to the 90 series Prado !!! what Can I say !! mmm Its only one word I can think of at the Moment and that is AWESOME !!!!   :P
Fellas anyone who have a 90 series Diesel would have to be drooling over what I have done seriously I could,nt go back driving a 90 series with a 1kzte engine ( the old series diesel engine )
I think anyone doing some serious 4wd competition should put the D4D engine in the old series Hilux ute I mean its got tons of power and torque it will be a awesome Rocket !!
ok just a few facts to point out before I give the full summary as well a brief how to do it info !!
The 90 series Prado is approx 300 kgs lighter than the 120 series !
the 120 series have different diff and gearbox ratio
the 120 series have way way too many sensors compare to the 90 series ( more chance of breakdown as computer goes into limp home mode for anything so minor ) reallys the 120 series is design like a Boeing 747
Both series are brilliant , design and comfort etc but I,ll admit the 120 series have fantastic seats compare to the 90 series ( Yes thats now on my shopping list)
well After a 6 weeks conversion (could be done in 2 weeks) mostly in my spare time I started My Great Aussie dream of installing a D4D into my 2002 90 series Prado , the old motor die after idler wheel on timing belt broke ( design fault which Toyota wont take responsibility)
First Thankyou for everyone who chipped in and offer the support etc I say a BIG Thankyou ,
Looking at wiring diagrams and engine structure if you ever plan on doing this conversion make SURE you have the Australian Version Wiring Diagram for both 90 and 120 series as I managed to get a European version which is Different in many areas thats caused a lot of Confusion )
The D4D engine will bolt straight into the 90 series without any modification to engine mounts and attached to the Gearbox not a problem but will have to change the flywheel to the same as old motor.
or keep the D4D fly wheel on but install the D4D gearbox with it ( this will cause more problems as the diff ratio wont be ideal to the D4D gearbox)
the other thing which is required is take the oil sump and oil pickup sensor as well the oil pick up tube over to the D4D as the D4D oil sump is different and wont fit in the 90 series layout
ops:
the oil sump fits straight on as Both engine blocks are the same
the engine mount of the old blocks need to be fitted to the New D4D block !
so far all good this is just the icing on the cake !!
there a lot of things to watch for when installing but I,ll leave that to the imagination
the hardest part is to understand the Wiring which involves attaching wires from the 90 series to the 120 series computer , this is what set me back big time when installing but at the end of the day i have written up a drawing of all the colour codes and layout of how to by pass many features and to get the computer to regonise the Ignition , immobilizer , car general wiring such as Lights etc, as well all the important functions such as Engine temperature, oil pressure, turbo flow , oxygen sensor , etc
within the first 2 weeks we have everything wired up and Connected, this was great I mean cranking the engine was a relief for me it one of the hardest thing to achieve but the sad thing she would,nt start after checking the wiring, I found the Immobilizer was,nt regonising on the 120 series so My bet is Toyota has changed the Security map perhaps from a 8 code immobilizer to a 12 code Immobilizer ??? I try to bypass the Immobilizer but Toyota done a Brilliant job on the security side of it that no matter how or what i do there NO way around it !! I had about 8 different auto electricians looking into it , They said it will never work !! Most of them wave the white flag after I told em the conversion etc llol . anyway The best move was to get the 120 series Immobilizer installed
after that you will need to reprogram the ECU and Immobilizer
Once I succeed this she started up like a very happy Puppy !!
She idle beautifully , a beautiful hum , just like the wing blowing gently through the trees during autumn
I stand back looking at the engine bay !! WoW she looked very Sexy !!
  ops:
Went for a drive around the block twice just purring along checking all functions etc all seems great but the temperature failed to move so I shutdown for argument sake , found I had a Loose wire ( took me Hours to find this problem )
after this went around the block and Oh boy took her to 3000 rpms in 2nd gear and wow she went like a Rocket if i can put it into respective details Lets say the old motor went 0 to 100 ks in 20 sec it felt like i was now doing 0 to 100 in 10 sec lol
after doing a trip to the blue mtns from sydney
these are what I notice
A Big Smile on my Face !
the D4D engine is Smoother and purrs quieter especially in the high revs
very Torquey !!
beautiful power band all the way to 3800 rpms
Accerlations heaps Quicker and Impressive
Overtaking is a Dream for example was in 4th gear doing 65ks , foot Down and 2 sec later engine would hit rev line and already doing 110 ks , My smiles on my face went to AWWWWWWW whooaaaaaa and Wow oh dont forget my heart rate went from 80 beats a minute to 300 a Sec !!
The new D4D is just awesome both city and Highway driving
On another note the other day a Stranger bumps into me while i was checking the oil with bonnet up etc he said Wow !! as it happern he had the 120 series D4D after a great chat I ask if < Not condoned here * Mod> the difference was interesting, we also swapped prado and notice big difference , the chap wanted to buy my prado on the spot with a blank check !!
Sadly I said NO !! ( My wife Thinks I was Insane ) Guess i,ll need your feedback here !!ta
the fuel consumption is too early to say I still havernt completed my first full tank ( 160 litres ) but considering whats it done Currently appears Improve fuel consumption hovering closer to the 10.2 litres per 100ks compare to the old engine was closer to 11.5 litres per 100 ks !!
Its a dream to drive !! If anyone Interested in doing this conversion or like more information feel free to e mail me or message me would love to see more smiling faces !!
I,m Now a True Converted Prado Freak !!!
Happy travelling
