  • What oil is best?

Hi I have a 2001 model 95 3.4 V6. What oil is best for the engine? I bought the car without a service record has 200 000km on the clock. I am busy doing a complete service. I used Shell Helix hx5 15w40 for the service dont know what oil was used previously, butt there are some blackish stuff that looks like carbon deposits inside of the oil filler cap. Any suggestions would be great.

Joined your group as there is not forums currently in South Africa with a lot of advice on the older prado's

15w40 will be fine, monitor oil usage over the next 5,000 kms to see if it’s using any oil. I have the same burnt looking oil deposits in my oil filler, don’t let it concern you.

Oil companies provide a list of oils etc you can research your cars requirements. https://www.penriteoil.com.au/

i currently use Penrite 10/40 full synthetic im my 2000 rv 3.4 and it has 283000ks on the clock and i have found it makes a massive difference in the runing of the motor and the oil does not blacken as much as other oils.

Also if you are on Face book join the Toyota prado mighty 90s page.

For me personally, I bought my car with 132,000km on the clock. 11 yrs later it has 376,000km. For the first couple of oil changes I used Castrol Magnatec 10w-40. Used Valvoline 15w-40 once. Then I became strictly a Penrite man for nearly 100,000km worth of oil changes (changed every 10,000km). Typically used 10w-50. Then Penrite’s prices went north if ridiculous across their whole range, so found a new oil to use and have done so for 100,000km. Nulon 15w-40 mineral grade (changed every 6,000-7,500km). The viscosity you use is dependant on your ambient temperatures. For S’Africa, the 15w-40 oil you bought will be just fine. If it’s a mineral grade oil & you plan on keeping your car long term, just make a point of never leaving it in your engine for more than 10,000km between changes.
