  • 5 warning lights, alternator not charging.

Hi everyone. I just joined this forum in the hope to find an answer to my problem and hopefully to contribute at a later stage.
    My vehicle is as follows:
    • TOYOTA LANDCRUISER PRADO KZJ95R 3.0L 1KZ-TE SOHC 8v Turbo Diesel Inj. 4cyl 4dr Wagon 4sp Auto 4WD [03/00 - 09/02]
    The problem.
While driving 5 warnings lit up simultaneously on the instrument panel.
    1. Battery
    2. Low oil level
    3. T-Belt
    4. Water in fuel
    5. Unknown. Orange on the far left.
Consequently the journey came to an end when the battery run flat due to the alternator not charging.

The alternator was replaced 4 months ago and is presumed operational. I suspect there must be some sort of problem with the field exciter current.
However, I don't know exactly how the voltage control circuit works on this car and I'm baffled by the 5 lights being on at the same time.
Before I day too much more. Is there anyone who has encountered this situation or similar?
Any help to shed some light on this Mostert is much appreciated.

    Checked made so far.
Checked system voltage. At battery voltage at all times. No charge.
Checked all main leads, connections earth's.
All fuses. Radio fuse blown. All others OK.
Removed instrument cluster, re- seated connectors at back.

    Thank you for your input.

Yes, anyone with a 90 has probably had the Christmas tree.
Alternator not charging or battery terminal.
There’s apparently a diode in the instrument cluster that causes the weird lights to illuminate if it senses no charging power.
The voltage regulator is built into the alternator, nothing external.
Check the wiring is still connected at the back of the alternator.
Have you got it wet recently? The diesel alternator is nice and high so it rarely has the water problems like the petrols.
Failing that you’ll have to remove it to investigate further.
Sometimes sticking brushes come good with a bit of tapping from a hammer handle.

Thank you cargo for your reply. The alternator is only 3 months old, but that does not mean it can't be faulty.
I started going in the direction of the instrument panel because of all the warning lights. In my thinking a faulty alternator brings only one light on. Having cargo's much valued input I'm going back to look at the alternator. It will be an easy fix as it is covered be warranty. Straight back to Repco.
I had nightmares that some strange problem in the instrument panel must be causing it all.
        Thank you so much cargo.
I'll get back and let you know exactly how it pans out.

For more info on the 90 I recommend joining the “Mighty 90’s” Facebook page.
As the 90 is quite old, most common faults are now well documented and the Mighty 90’s has a menu.
Items like front ball joint failure, viscous fan hub overhaul, steering rack bushes, the Christmas tree, etc are all covered.

The xmas tree is normal, it is a test function to illuminate the warning lights so that you can see they are working,
when you start the motor the charge light goes out when the alternator starts charging and that signals the
instrument panel to turn of the test function and the lights go out unless of course there is a system fault.

Sounds like your alternator is not charging, if the charge lamp lights when you turn on the ignition the alternator
is getting power to the regulator ok, just not putting anything out.

I fitted a new alternator today and "what a feeling" when the lights went off at start up.
The old one was still under warranty and Repco on Noosaville replaced it without asking questions.
Thank you for all the help I received from this forum.

                Good that it’s fixed.
Now you know what to look for if it happens down the track. Might be something simple like a loose battery terminal next time.
The bulb test function at IGN on illuminates all the dash bulbs, quite different to the fault one sees when the alternator fails.
Just a few random warning lights.

I'm having this same issue atm. However my alternator is charging at about 13.8v. I swapped over with another known working alternator today but all dash lights still on. My issue started off with the tail light circuit fuse blowing. Removed my cigarette light socket USB device and the fuse on the circuit stopped blowing but then all the dash lights came on. Haven't been able to get them off since. Not DTC codes. Tried unplugging battery earth for 10mins. I'm not on FB so can't ask in the mighty 90s group but if anyone sees anything relevant on there, be sure to share! Cheers

My issue turned out to be a faulty ignition fuse. Fuse looked fine but after swapping it for a new one, the problem went away!
