I ordered my Prado in 1997 and it was delivered in September / October. Back then the dealer fitted the Air-Con is the GXL, with the 3.4 petrol V6. I also ordered other options, carpets, a factory tow bar (an Australian made one) and an alloy bull bar. It cost all up on the road, in 1997, $55,000. They were not cheap back then.
Last year I owned four cars. I sold my Camry Grande to my son for $2,500. It was in perfect nick. I was going to sell him my Prado too. But it failed its roadworthy. The roadworthy place said: the rear brakes needed replacing, so too the front struts (my son has been driving it for the last three years and he said he'd done the struts, but clearly not). Also there is a water pump going, but its time for its another timing belt anyway. Its mileage is I think 215,000km. The roadworthy fellow (a Midas Indian gentleman who recently purchased a Midas franchise) said the vehicle had rust underneath, and also, that it would need certification for not having rear seats (the third row). Although I do have those seats, but my son put in a storage slide out draw set that stopped those being usable. They could be hung perhaps.
So ... I am wondering whether to fix it up, or sell it? And also, it has a chip in the windscreen which failed. It also needs a new rear road side guard, as one fitted got knocked and its just screwed in. Its a silver coloured vehicle. The guards are difficult to get now.
If anyone knows someone able to get it marketable, I'd be interested. I live in Brighton, Melbourne. I do tow a caravan, but have always done that with my Discovery, as 2014 HSE.
I had bought a 2012 150 Prado, a Kakadu, but I did not like it. It felt slow and heavy. And not really quieter than the 90 series, which is a joy to drive, I think because its light. I bought the Kakadu because its front seats were comfortable, and I thought I would keep it for a long time. I had tried the 150 GXL, but its front seats were horrible. Very nasty cheap uncomfortable seats, for me, and my wife, compared to the lovely seats in my 90 series GXL. So I got a 150 with decent front seats. It also had alloy bull bar and tow bar. But when I then bought my off road van, which weighs 2.4 tonne filled, I thought the Prado not powerful enough to not avoid stressing it out. So I sold the Kakadu and while almost getting a new 200 Sahara ( back in 2104 and we had agreed on a price but then the dealer backed out), so I was cross with the dealer and Toyota so I ended up with the Disco. Its been faultless except for driver rubber seal, and the third row seat catch is fiddly on one side). We also have an RX Lexus, circa now 2009. I'm retired and would like to scale down the vehicles. My son's wife is also wanting to get pregnant, and they are saying the Prado doesn't have air bags. At the time, I did not like the ABS on Prados, as they did not work on slippery surfaces. The air bags were an option attached to the ABS, so no air bags, although I think on those, there were only two front ones. With the air bags, there was no grip rail in front of the glove box. I will check the mileage. Also my son put new tyres on the Prado, both of us not thinking there would be a RWC issue with the vehicle.
The vehicle now qualifies for a club rego in Victoria too I think. If registered of course! Its still registered, but it needs the RWC!
