  • Big service report... need advice!

So, got the car back from the 170k service today and here's the report of what needs to be done...

    - Front disc rotors are lipped and need replacing
    - Rear main oil seal is leaking badly
    - Front sway bar D bushes are worn and require replacing
    - Front sway bar link rod bushes are cracked and require replacing
    - LHR bump stop is broken and needs replacing
    - Both front shocker lower bushes are torn and shocker requires replacing
    - Rear tailshaft uni joint has freeplay and requires replacing

So in other words, goodbye tax return. My questions though, are:

    What causes all of these?
Front rotors, might as well upgrade, should I go DBA slotted?
Shockers are only at maximum 2 years old, I haven't done any corrugations, is this abnormal considering I don't go 4wding that often?
What can I/should I/or could consider upgrading or look at whilst doing this to avoid future problems?

Are the discs still within thickness tolerance? If so I wouldnt bother replacing them.

    Fix the rear main.

Are the bushes squeking? Is it handling ok? If so replace. If not I wouldnt rush.

How 'independent' is this report? I'm just wondering if you should seek a second opinion. Don't think some of the problems could have developed so quickly since the last service... but then again, I'm no expert.

Re: Big service report... need advice!

        - Front disc rotors are lipped and need replacing
If the rotors are within spec there is not real need to replace right now, but a judgment call needs to be made on how close they are along the lines of "will they last till next service". If the answer is no, replace them. If yes leave them. If they are within spec you could get them skimmed/machines to remove the lip
        - Rear main oil seal is leaking badly
        Get it fixed IMO
        - Front sway bar D bushes are worn and require replacing
Easy job to do yourself (do a search there should be some info around the place) and save some cash on labour. Cost of bushes is ~$30
        - Front sway bar link rod bushes are cracked and require replacing
As with above but bushes price I'm not sure of
        - LHR bump stop is broken and needs replacing
As with above but price I'm not sure of
        - Both front shocker lower bushes are torn and shocker requires replacing
Common on prados with a few kms on the front shocks. all the front end weight is on those bushes so they do cop a flogging. If they are OEM toyota ones (and some other aftermarket ones as well) a bush can be purchased separately to the whole shock, cost is ~$50 i think. If they mean the shock itself is shagged and needs replacing then my suggestion is to replace them (consider doing the back end as well, you will notice the difference with new shocks if the old ones are more than 50k/3 years old)
        - Rear tailshaft uni joint has freeplay and requires replacing
greasing it may fix the problem, but it may also be shagged, if so get it replaced IMO

          Cheers for the replies.

Rear main will be replaced for sure (expensive).

I'm pretty sure the discs are past thickness tolerance, the report actually says "replace urgently"

As far as I can tell the bushes aren't squeaking and it is handling ok. Might need to get a second opinion on that.

This report is just from my usual Toyota dealer.

Shocks are Ironman and only about 2 years old. Hopefully can just replace the bushes then...

Rear tailshaft was greased and still had freeplay.

What have you been quoted to do the rear main out of interest?
I was bracing my self when mine started to leak at how much it would be, i threw a bottle of nulon stop leak in it and now its as dry as a bone.
I realise its not a permanant fix but its working for me at the moment.

They said $1200-$1400 and that's presuming nothing else inside has caused it to go =S

Cheers, I think I might. I imagine Toyota overcharge a bit considering by the looks of it 75% of their mechanics were apprentices!

I purchased the above parts from ebay cheap and got my mech to put them in:

I suggest you get the clutch looked at if it fairly worn . Id get that done at the same time as the rear main will save you labour costs in the long run

Don't have the money to do anything extra at the moment either
