  • 100 series springs for 95 series prado

    If annyone has some advice,

It is time to do something with my suspension. The 2001 TD 95series GXL has just clocked 105,000 and the front shocks are worn and need replacing anyway, so started looking around at some options. It is currently stock underneath apart from poly airbags (towed a camper trailer throgh the territory) and it handles like a prawn trawler.

TJM 4X4 said they can fit 2" lift springs to suit a 100 series, that will hold the prado 3" as it is a much lighter vehicle. The springs and shocks are their own brand. He showed me an employees 95seried RV that had been done a few months earlier and he seems happy with it.

If any one knows if this is such a good idea and if with a 3'' lift it will ride better or worse than it does now, and if the missus will still fit it into Westfield car park (no roof racks) or if any one knows of a better alternative,

    Thanks,
    Gus

    Welcome Gus

I would leave it few more months and check back with the TJM guy, 3" is a big lift for the front CV's. Ask how many CV boots he has torn.

I have 2" tough dogs done at climax in Thornton, and have split a boot.

As far as height my 2" comes very close to most carparks, I try to avoid them.

I'd agree that 3" on the front end is probably a bit much for the CV's.

As for height, I have 2" lifted suspension (well, it is meant to be, I haven't actually measured) and a 2" body lift. I have Rola roof racks (fairly low), and today I had about 2cm more stuff over the racks and my road tyres (265/70R16 I think). I got into a shopping center carpark signposted at 2.1m, but hit the 'warning bar' at a 2m section of the carpark.

        Thanks for the input.

I was a bit concerned about the 3'' lift, i might keep looking around for now

        Thanks

Same here. I've got my FM aerial sitting 100mm above the top of the roof rack ... it gives me a small margin for contractors with dodgy tape measures.

Got caught once though .. underground shopping centre carpark in Cairns. The entry was fine but they had fitted a pile of ducting, to the ceiling, that hung down another 200 - 300 mm .... getting out was a nightmare.

          Cheers

            95 Front shocks....

After many different tests and a lot of wondering I have fitted in my 3.0 1KZ-TE 95 AT the front springs coming from a 120 TD, together with standard 95 front shocks -not expensive and very easy to find-. After a small period of settle, the front lift is very reasonable, the donwards wheel travel is more than enough and the handling is night and day, both in acuracy and MOST important on braking, because now under heavy braking the nose doesnt try to digg a hole in front of you.

Keep in mind that spring rate will go from 91 to 121, but if you have any front extra weight hanging around -bumber, bull bar, winch double battery...- the improvement is extraordinary.

Regarding the rear, a much more customized solution has to be taken. 120 spring do give the height -not much more than standard ones in good shape-, but since their diameter is bigger on top, they tend to slide to the side, and specially the right hand side one transmits funky noises to the front when touching the frame. In my oppinion, unless you tow a heavy trailor, OME890 will do the job, but strndard shock will be a little streched and after a long period will not work properly. either go for Nitro or -cheaper and as good- 120 rear shocks...

            Regards

              Re: 95 Front shocks....

has anyone else tried mix and matching 90 and 120 springs/shocks? how do 120 series springs and shocks differ from the 90's? why not fit the 120 shocks to the front along with the springs?

i need to change the set up on my 95 series and here in the U.K. the choices are limited to OE toyota or OME which is very expensive. so any advice would be useful.

              thanks

120 front springs are OK as I explained on previous post, but they have to be fitted on 95 original shocks. 120 shocks in the front are not usable, because they are coil overs and even though the real wheel travel is close to the 95's, the fact is that they have an aditional piece in the bottom: a 5 cm or so steel piece linking the shock bottom eye and the actual body of the shock, so it would be just too much to be fiited and almost impossible to recover the right front wheel toe in, camabar an caster without forthing the transmisions.
The back... OME 890 with 120 shocks are alright.
Probably you can get the parts from someone upgrading they 120's to a more radical fitting (check with local dealers)
