We could talk all day about tyres but Im about to get some tyres 265/70/16 the standard size and ive been chewing on doing a number of things to my old 90 .. tyres are a variable item , my use is more suited to A/T at the most ,as i dont mud out much these days , but i do enjoy at least one trip a year to the islands or a sand adventure. the rest of the time im generally on the road with an ocational trails adventure time . I could go the micky Thompson or the mighty Bf goodridge , but there are some that i see online with some prices that smash the primium tyres on price at least ,,, and reviews are fairly good ...

    here are a few examples

    pictured above.
G-MAX GRIP 265-70-16 ALL TERRAIN BRAND NEW TYRES 2657016 265/70R16

    Desert Hawk A/T tyres

So fellow 4x4 people has anyone had good cheapo tyres or could recommend one , the reviews on both of these are fairly good considering their price...

Well, the short answer is : no I never had any dramas with Federal MT, Maxxis; Bridgestone MT674.(when they were still cheap) or alike
I still happily use them (Federal Cougar right now)

The only time I had an issue was with Cooper ST some 10 years ago when after some 5k km the thread overtook me on the freeway.
Warranty replacement and could have been a one off but I never had that with cheaper ones.
And yes, the "cheaper" all did last less than the Cooper did but they were providing me with traction on till the very end and the Cooper I had to replace because they were getting hard not because they were worn.

Personally I have rather some fresh tires every few years at a lower price than expensive ones lasting longer and getting hard over time.
    In terms of puncture resistance I can not confirm any advantage of the more expensive ones over my "Cheapies";
I had no flats on all my outbacktravel but friends with Coopes and BFG had.
Again, that could have been good luck, but it doesn't seem to me that more expensive tire are necessarily better.

Please note: all the tires I used where MT which provably by design a bit more sturdy.
    Hope that helps

    Cheers
    Mike

Ive used cheaper tyres in the past... I often refer to them as the oval shaped tyres. They were out of round lol.

I had inconsistent tyre wear. I had one tyre wear incredibly quickly regardless of it's position on the vehicle. I could've sworn it wore while it was on the back door as our spare!

Wet weather performance surprised me, they weren't the greatest, but they certainly were not crap.

Here's an example of what can happen with poor tyres from major brands, let alone cheap ones.

Maybe he's referring to the tyre's composition material delaminating?

I tend to agree with this also , i was talking to a tyre guy just at the local store and his point of view is that something like coopers that are 300 odd dollas per tyre are the best value cuz they last longer so there for cheaper in the long run. although its a sales pitch , the dont get cheap if the go hard and start slipping in the wet , like the old tyres i have on now. ....

oh my , thats pretty poor , they must have been flawed from day one ,... what brand were they so i can think to avoid those ones..... although the cheapo tyres may have some that are really poor quality , but some are reviewed with high standards , like a 4 out of 5 stars like the two that i presented earlier. ....

i have seen quality tyres deformed a number of times during the years , in standard vehicles , often cuz poor suspension contributed dramatically to deformed and oval tyres.

Hi Kygar , that video demonstrates that any manufacturer could easily" f up" a product that may cost lives . the price tag did not contribute to there deaths , infact it seemed as those the more expensive and specialized tyres seemed to be the dangerous ones. ... I think the video demonstrates that anything can happen but money does not necessarily come in the equation within the video.

forgive me for disagreeing , at least from the perspective of your post.

I dont know what you mean about hijacking the discussion , its good to have different opinions , infact im hoping for more input and opinions but at the same time allowing each to there oun with opinions , my intention is to learn and share information and experience ..

I think your local driving conditions play a bit part in your decision too.
I too moved my old Coopers to the shed as they were like driving a dray. Trailer tyres now.
I run Maxis A/T on the steer as they're a bit softer than the Dueller A/T's I run on the rear. Both were similar $$$.
But after the Bungles my front end must have moved, she'd chewed away the inside of my right front well and truly by the time we got back.
I'd have been even more cranky than I am if I'd payed Coopers $$ just to get worn away.

                          Hey
                          Tonz ,
I've actually got the Grippmax tyres, I needed a cheap set to do me for a few months before getting a decent set for a trip along the Gibb.
In short, i'm pretty happy with them, and havent had any issues that werent expected. (Wearing on the outside due to a lift)
The lugs arent the strongest and i can see a few small tears appearing, The self clean ok, but there is alot of road noise.
The only thing i dont like about them, is that even at 40psi, the side wall is still bowed out a fair bit, and due to this weakness in the side wall, you can feel it flex when you drive about a corner.

But for the money mate, I'm happy.
I've had them on for about 15k now. been in sand, mud, clay, rock and rivers. Good wet weather grip as well.

                          Hope that helps mate

Replaced my desert hawk muddies (they were on the 120 when I bought it) a few months ago even though they had about 40% tread left. Unfortunately they all had large cracks in the sidewall which according to the dealer in Mackay is my fault as they have not been kept to min 40 psi. I went with Nitto terra grappler G2 (made in Japan by Toyo). Bob Jane had a 4 for the price of 3 deal going and others on this site gave good reports. So far happy with them though they are a bit noisy on very smooth bitumen surfaces. Good grip on wet and dirt roads, haven't been to the beach or mud yet. At $765 for 4 new tyres I can't complain
1997 petrol auto, 430 000km. Still going strong.
2004 petrol auto, 233 000km. Cracked dash and no help from Toyota!
