  • Help an FJ get to the PP GTG 2010

    Pointers,

I am planning on attending the PradoPoint GTG in Alice Springs next (the following) July. There is a lot I can handle on my end, but some help "down there" may be needed.

    1) I have an estimate to send the FJ from Los Angeles to Melbourne and they can import the the vehicle back, but they are unable to secure shipping. I need some estimates on container shipping the FJ from Melbourne to Los Angeles or (preferably) Baltimore, MD, USA. I am able to send for less than $2,000 US, and was hoping I can get the same back up. If it is a 2 car container I may be able to get a friend that has the same sense of adventure that can join me. For estimate reasons the vehicle is a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser.

    2) I need some form of OZ insurance. My insurance stops at 50 miles outside the US, so I need something to satisfy the lienholder (Toyota Financial USA). I can go to Lloyd's of London, but the cost is astonishing.

    3) My in dash GPS unit will not work in OZ (neither will the radio or satellite radio). I either need a GPS disc for an eclipse AVN with Australian maps, or need to borrow a local GPS unit. < Piracy not condoned on this forum>

    4) I want to visit the guy's at ARB in Melbourne. Is there anyone that has a contact there that can secure a meet up. I know some of them have seen pics of my rig, but it would be COo.oOL to meet some of the guy's there and let them crawl around it.

    and most important.....

    5) I need some PradoPointers to wheel with on the way back from Alice Springs. I would like to get on the Simpson Desert run on the way back to Melbourne.

I will probably add more things I need help with later, but this is what I can think of now.

    Thank you everyone,

    -Ben (your American cousin)

Look forward to seeing you and your family down here for the GTG mate.

I would suggest contacting an Insurance Broker here in Australia to see what they can do for you in this regard. Have a check via this website for an australian broker and find one that deals with off road policies.

    http://www.needabroker.com.au/

    3) My in dash GPS unit will not work in OZ (neither will the radio or satellite radio). I either need a GPS disc for an eclipse AVN with Australian maps, or need to borrow a local GPS unit.

Can I draw your attention to this ebay item:

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/WHEREIS-AUSTR...QQcmdZViewItem

    or this one:

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/WhereIs-Satel...QQcmdZViewItem

If you cannot get an australia map for your indash GPS then I would suggest that you visit one of the chain stores here when you arrive and pick up portable satnav unit like a Tom Tom One which will have the latest Oz map and usually it will have the latest speed camera files incorporated as well. We are talking around A$400.00 and then flog it off when you are about to go home on ebay or in a pub.

    4) I want to visit the guy's at ARB in Melbourne. Is there anyone that has a contact there that can secure a meet up. I know some of them have seen pics of my rig, but it would be COo.oOL to meet some of the guy's there and let them crawl around it.

I am pretty sure that Stan ( LC120_man) is thinking of putting a return Simpson Desert crossing on if there is enough interest and Stan is from Vic I believe give him a PM to see what his plans are in this regard.

I will probably add more things I need help with later, but this is what I can think of now.

    Thank you everyone,

What is appox date to move from AUS to US and appox date needed to Arrive to US?

Yes, once we know the dates when you are here we
will organise a meet in Melbourne before or after the trip

        and most important.....

What is the approx date you are planning to arrive?
We are planning to go through Simpson on the way to PP meet.

And you can tag along with us back to Melbourne

          lc120,

I was thinking about arriving a week before, wheeling at the event fore a week and wheel back to Melbourne the week after. I can only get about 3 weeks of leave at a time due to employer restrictions. The dates are flexible as long as I can make the meet. The transit time is about 20-25 days, so I would have to be without my FJ for a month on either end, but it's not a daily driver.

No matter what the dates are I want to make it up to Kakadu. It looks like heaven to me. My original itinerary took me from Melbourne, up the gold coast, across the Queensland to the Northern Territory and to Kakadu. South to Alice Springs, and the Simpson dessert on my way back to Melbourne.

US registration is fine with a local temporary permit and insurance according to ExpeditionPortal and other US visitors that have been there. The only problem is insurance. I'm working on that in the next few days.
If someone local can contact. (below) and obtain information for me it would be much appreciated.

          13-15 Challis Street

          Telephone: (02) 6207 7000
          Fax: (02) 6207 7120

I have a lienholder and the problem is that I have to either pay off the vehicle before I leave, or refinance with a bank that will allow me to take it out of the country for more than 30 days. I was thinking about paying off the vehicle with a home equity line to avoid the lienholder problems.

          Thanks for the input.

          -Ben

            I also forgot.....

I also need a local address and contact (preferably in Melbourne) for the carnet papers. I am attempting to do the paperwork myself, but the exporting company does most of it anyway.

I am definitely ahead of myself because most of the paperwork is only valid for one year to the departure date of the respected country.

At least I'm going to know what I'm getting into.

I can understand bringing your truck for a 6mths or more trip, but for 3 weeks... you're keen! Haven't thought of renting one?

The cost of renting a 4x4 is more than shipping. Plus I get the experience and adventure in a rig I know well. I have been wanting a trip to Australia for about 10 years now and this seemed the the perfect time to do it. As for the 3 weeks I have a job that I'm Lucky to get even that. It seems that things fall apart when I'm not around and I have the type of job you can't really hire a temp.

I travel to New England usually a couple of times a year. With enough of us, we could start bringing it in piece by piece... It might take a little longer

I may also need a UHF setup. I think "borrowing" one may be better because they are useless in the US........or are they?

                      I will find out.

                      -Ben

What do you think about icom? They don't make CB's here in the US, but I have one of the aviation NAV-COM radios and I like it. -Ben

I like the Uniden UH015SX Remote Head UHF CB Radio

Can you place the unit under the dashboard and attach the faceplate remotely?

                        Ben,

Handheld UHF should be enough for you if traveling in the group.
You should be able to buy a decent one for under $AU200, cheap onces are about $60 for a pair.

I want to check the legality of the bandwidth here in the US. Our CB radios only have a range of a mile or two and this might be something worth looking into.

IMHO This is looks like very tight schedule and you'll end-up driving all day every day for at least 14 days... Just Simpson Desert leg (if you decide to do it) will take at least 8+ days

I do need to sit down and look at an a map closer. I have only gone off what I have read and what others here have recommended. There is so much to do and such little time.

The dates are flexible a little, but I have issues with contractors and employees I have to consider as well.
