  • Spare Tyres Required

I carry two spares normally, one on the Prado another on the trailer. I can use either of the spares on the trailer or Prado. I have another spare I can fit on the roof if required. I also carry an ARB puncture repair kit. Should I carry the third spare at the GTG?

I would think that you are pretty right with what you have, however if you are doing the Simpson crossing with Stan then that would be a different matter.

Thanks guys. Having not done any 'outback' touring before what other spares should I pack?

Although we will be off roading we are not going to be out of reach of essential parts as there is a Toyota dealership in town as well as tyre and mechanical services. Too be honest I doubt you will be needing any other spares than what you currently have. If however you were to be doing a Simpson crossing then you would need to be prepared for every possibility.

Depending on the seriousness of the off-roading, a spare pair of undies might be essential!

                Re: Spare Tyres Required

D4D I like you have limited out back experience so am taking it easy and thought the Oodnadatta track would be a nice introduction on the way up and or back

My spares list will be pretty simple

                Air compressor
                Tyre Guage
                Spare belts
                Spare hoses
                Fuses
                Wire
                Cable Ties
                Basic tool kit

CDMA phone and UHF for communications

I was not going to bother with extra spare tyres just one for the car and one for the trailer all tyres are only 6 months old. I have a tyre mate looking around for an old Cooper ATR carcass for me if i find one i may bring it along and hope to borrow tyre pliers or some other tools i would need advise however as i would not know how to use them

                  Chester,
I think the CDMA phone will work well for a paper weight. Do you mean 3G or Next G? Or have I missed something here?
                  Regards

                    Re: Spare Tyres Required

Guys make sure that you at least have tubeless tyre repair kit so you can plug the holes to keep the car mobile...
Also there are no CDMA coverage around Oodnadatta track.
There are tyre repair facilities in Birdsville, Oodnadata and Mount Dare, which can fix a tyres for you...
As for the second spare - it's a Marfy's law - if you don't take one - you'll need it , and if you do - you won't

Unless things have changed this year... No service once you pass Leigh Creek (or Roxby if you are going that way) and its patchy north of Quorn/Hawker. There are public phones in Maree/William Creek/Oodnadatta (They take phone cards, Not change)

UHF (with duplex) is fine for the track. UHF channel info for the track is available from the Pink Road House (Website) or keep an eye on the tourist signs along the track, the nearest stations UHF channel is usually marked on them.

unless you have a high volume compressor i would suggest to take a tube to fit your size tyre as alot of these larger size tyres are quite hard to reinflate as tubeless with low pressure compressors.also the plug will have to be removed from inside tyre b4 you fit the tube and have a tube patch and glue just incase you pinch the tube when refitting the outside bead onto rim.get your local tyre guy to show you if you have no idea .

                            Re: Spare Tyres Required

if you take tyre pliers make sure that you know how to use them as i took a homemade set and found at the time they were needed they didnt work .although im an experienced tyre fitter from way back i ended up using my 2 stage jack with putting my 2 tyre levers under it(because the jack has sharp corners on it) across the tyre and jack down from under my camper trailer to brake the bead .also needed a tyre/bead chisel and 4lb hammer to aid in getting the back bead off.
ive seen on lcool site how you can use your prado/l-cruiser jack under your towbar to jack down onto your bead to brake it-also better to have tried this b4 accually needing to do it in the middle of nowhere...
                            hope this may help
