For those that attended the GTG and took the opportunity to visit Rainbow Valley consider yourself privileged to have done so before the fencing goes up. There is now a proposal to fence off parts of Rainbow Valley.

Another area to be quarantined from the public I'm glad I took my family and visited when we did.

Don't know if the pics would look as nice with a large fence in frame:

We've been back several days now and still can't believe it's over. A big thanks to you and your wife, mav - a fantastic effort indeed. Just starting to get my head around sorting through photos, but in the meantime I've posted a bunch of photos from the post-GTG Simpson crossing on the 2009 Simpson Desert Crossing to 2009 PP Get Together thread.

Well, 50-something days and 15000-odd kilometres later I've finally arrived back at home from my GTG adventures. Thanks to all who attended the GTG for making it such a great experience, especially Mav for all the organisation that went into making it such a good week, it was great to meet all of the faces behind the names.
The Prado performed flawlessly the entire time, with the only damage to report being a broken UHF aerial (another 1 to add to the ever-growing Pradopoint aerial scrapheap) and a bit of bash-plate and side-step support damage from skytrek.
Once I sort through the few thousand photos that I've taken I'll post up a bit of a trip report, in the meantime I'll be trying to get the Prado cleaned up (taking it to a detailer is looking like a good option right about now) and counting down the days before I have to return to work

            cheers

              • Re: The 2009 PradoPoint Get Together Experience Thread

Well I've finally managed to get a few of the photos sorted and processed. This first group covers a few of the highlights of our 3 day trip from Adelaide to the GTG.

Our first day was relatively uneventfuly with a leisurely drive straight up the blacktop to Roxby Downs which was to be our first stop. Along the way we stopped at the historic aerospace site at Woomera to check out a few of the old rockets fired into the desert along with an assortment of vintage aircraft.

We stayed at the Myall Grove caravan park which had good facilities but unfortunately also seemed to have its fair share of idiots. The highlight was the drunk idiot wandering naked through the park at 11:00pm yelling at his mates and trying to pick a fight with anyone that was in his way. Bush camping has soooooo many advantages.

Day 2 saw us pick up a few extra supplies in town (all the things we left behind) before heading out to the mine for a quick visit. I planned to visit a monument to my grandfather who was the miner to discover the ore deposit at Olympic Dam but to my surprise they had moved the main gates and it was no longer accessible to the public. Fortunately the staff at Olympic Dam and the Tourist Centre were good enough to arrange a quick escorted drive inside the gates so my family could our phot taken at the site. The first photo is of the monument and the second is of the mine shaft named after my grandfather.

From Olympic Dam we headed out borefield road to join the Oodnadatta track and to start heading north.

We found the track in good condition and in general it was a pretty smooth ride. We travelled along the track until we came to Lake Eyre South carpark where we stopped for a snack and a quick chat with a few other travellers. No water in the lake this far south though.

From there it was off to Coward Springs via the Curdimurka siding home of the famous B&S Ball.

Coward Springs is truly amazing and I would love to go back and spend more time staying in the area but unfortunately our time was limited and we needed to press on towards Oodnadatta. We did however visit the springs themselves which are quite a sight in an otherwise barren landscape.

No drive along the track is complete without a stop at the William Creek Hotel and possibly a scenic flight out to Lake Eyre to see the waters. Given the huge queue of people waiting for a scenic flight it was not going to be possible and we had to settle with visiting the pub.

Our final destination for the day was Oodnadatta and the Pink Roadhouse where we stayed out the back in the "caravan park". Dinner was the obligatory Ood Burger and a can of coke in the roadhouse and then an early night for all.

That brings us to day 3 and our trip up the Old Ghan line. First stop Pedirka Siding and then on to Dalhousie Springs for lunch and a quick dip (too quick for the girls). The road from Hamilton through to Dalhousie was truly some of the worst we travelled on for the whole trip and really shook the car about. Dalhousie was busy which is not surprising. It is also the first place where we met up with a few of the WA PP attendees although they were to take a different route to Ross River.

From Dalhousie it was off to Mt Dare and from there we quietly slipped across the border into the Northern Territory and our camp for the night somewhere south of Finke. This was truly one of the best nights of the trip with only us with a great camp site, a great fire, a lovely sunset and the company of our travelling companion Justin. It was also a night of many firsts for Paulette and the girls.

The following day was a leisurely drive up the Old Ghan Line to Alice Springs with a quick stop at the town of Finke for a quick photo at the start finish line of the Finke desert race. I think we even managed to drive on the track a few times by mistake. Not a lot to report other than a lot of dodging of railway spikes.

From Finke we headed to Alice Springs, fuelled up and then headed out to Ross River to meet up with our fellow PPers in the afternoon.

                To be continued.......(maybe)

Last selection of photos from the GTG. Thanks to all of you who made it a wonderful experience.

Kings Canyon. Thanks to Jane for suggesting an early walk around the canyon rim. Was certainly a beautiful place to be in the morning and a sight I'm glad I didn't miss.

Panorama of the Olgas from the dunes viewing platform.

Walpa Gorge at the Olgas. We would like to have done the Valley of the Winds tour that a lot of others did but the kids just were not up to it this particular day. If anyone has photos I would like to see them.

A view of Ayers Rock on the road between The Olgas and Ayers Rock.

Campsite for the two days and nights we were at Yulara. Well Paulette and the kids were pretty much camped there anyway.
