  • Gettin home from the 2011 GTG

Planning our trip to get to the GTG was easy, with 3 days to get from Loxton to SEQ the plan is to drive in a straight line as best we can, so hit the dirt 40k from home then up through Menindee, Wilcannia and Bourke which will get us half way with only 40k of bitumen. Then back on the black top and continue to the GTG.

We will have 7 days to make it back home, not loads of time but it gives us the chance to take a less direct route. Any advice on which way to go and what to look out for? I am thinking about heading in the general direction of Bathurst as I have never seen Mt Panorama and thought a drive around might be cool.

So that would mean 4-5 days to Bathurst, then 2-3 days to get back to Loxton in South OZ. Never been around the around from say Grafton down to Canberra so any advise would be welcome.

    Cheers Andrew

    Andrew,

I'm sure that the boys would be happy to give you the GPS track for last years run down to the GTG, there wasn't too much bitumen between QLD & Barrington Tops, I guess you could do a couple of sections and then depending on timings pop back out onto the blacktop and continue south at a greater pace.

The sections from Grafton south are particularly interesting but not arduous AFAIK.

    Cheers,

    Dave

        Hi There,

Are there any Vics heading straight home after the GTG?

If so, what are your planned routes?

Please advise as I may tag along.

          Stuart,
We'll be spending the Sunday, Monday nights around the gold coast and going to Dreamworld for my young blokes 5th birthday, but then it's straight down the Hume for 2 days to get back to work for the Thursday. Rushed trip home but we leave Vic to head North on the 23rd Sept.

Here is a bit of a glimpse at our trip to and from the GTG, hope you enjoy!

As I said above, planning the trip to the GTG was easy, drive the staightest line possible from Loxton to Neurum Creek; which meant following the Darling.

No need for maps or a GPS when you have top quality signs to follow!

It was easy going up the Darling despite following a rain shower most of the way, just had to be careful as you never know what obstacles might be on the track

Especially had to look out for the wildlife, roos by the dozen, emus by the hundred and goats by the thousand, as well as more than a few cows and sheep that were upset by us disturbing their peace ans quiet.

            Cheers Andrew

We started to notice a lot of water on the side of the road North of Brewarrina.

We should have guessed this would be coming, it made for a nice detour through some station tracks though.

              Crossing into QLD

And just one of the interesting sights along the way.

              Cheers Andrew

Getting home from the GTG was less organised, after Hutch suggested the Condamine run we decided to head that direction to wash any salt off from under the Prado, other than that we aimed to be in Bathurst by Friday for a couple of hot laps around the track lol!

We tried to travel through the Taloom State Forest, it was all good until a locked gate stopped us, we spent 2 hours mostly lost, trying to find a way through, found some good tracks but no way through! Time to turn around again.

No point in wearing out the bridge! And a campsite on the Clarence river

                      Cheers Andrew
