  • 2018 Prado & Suspension Upgrade - Does it stop the sea-sick feeling?

    Hi,

I am keen to buy a 2018 Prado, but after a test drive I was vetoed by my better half as she was threatening sea-sickness.

I've read that putting in something like OME suspension will fix it, but the fear is that I go ahead and it does not solve it. The ideal would be to get a test drive, but as can be expected getting to drive as a passenger in a modified car is not an easy option.

My question is if anyone has bit the bullet with the same problem and come out the other side having solved it with a suspension upgrade? The follow-up question is if you went for extra load to stiffen it up more, or was the the up to 200kg enough?

Thanks in advance to any more adventurous soul.

Yes, it solves it to a very large degree (I'd say eliminate it, but that's subjective). It's exactly what I did, and yes went OME with the 200kg load amount (they offer two, a 30mm and a 50mm - I went for the 30mm and will increase the tyres to 265/70 to give the approx 45mm).

The main reason I got it was because I was going to put a bar on it with lights, which I did. However, even with that 85kg steel lump forward of the front wheels fitted, it dives far less and it what I would call more like a normal 4WD or SUV. If you're not fitting a bar, then it'll behave even better.

Wait for a 4WD show and you'll get a better deal on prices.

Thanks helps hugely with the approval process .

Will check our the 4WD shows - unfortunately down in blustery VIC, so the QLD show next month will be out and missed last weekends show.

Which model did you test drive? I found the lower models had this problem but the higher models with KDSS helped reduce it.

I find the stock suspension slightly less damped than a prawn trawler. Any decent matched set of springs and shocks fixes it. Make sure you do your research and dont just buy the first thing recommended by a 4wd place. There is a lot of good info here. Anyone in Brisbane or SEQ I recommend talking with John Zordo, he knows his stuff.

KDSS may well fix the suspension but as it only comes with the Kakadu now with rear air bag suspension which is not everyone's suspension of choice, not to mention the $ and the fruit.

I was looking at the GXL - while leather is nice, cold winters and hot summers in vic are not ideal for us. I've also heard KDSS fixes some of the roll, but not put it to the test yet.
