  • Prado 120 V Prado 150

G'day all, I have been agonising over whether to upgrade from my 2008 120 (28000K) to a new 150. Initially I was looking at the Kakado then after much thought I decided there was to much stuff in it that i did not need or want. I had obtained a good trade in offer on either a Kakado or a GXL. After much thought I have come to the conclusion that the new vehicle is not as good as the 120. I have decided to keep the 120.
Money is not the reason for keeping the 120 as I can afford either the new Kakado or GXL. My main reason for not upgrading is due to the need to tow a caravan and fit a decent size Aux battery 100amp hour min (unless it's inside the car). Can't see how my fridge slide would fit due to the 3rd row seats (that I don't need) and would also need to fit a 12V outlet at the rear. I have read that the new Prado is not the best as a tug (see Caravan and Motorhomes latest mag).
The issues I have raised may seem minor to some of you however they are important to me. I was wondering who else has been down this path and moved away from the new 150.

    Re: Prado 120 V Prado 150

Personally i don't like the look of the 150 compared to the 120, interior and exterior (Not that I'm in the market for a new car). I can't see the point of going the 150 unless its offering something the 120 hasn't got. When I was looking for a Prado i didn't mind the 90 but I liked the look of the 120 better so I sent myself broke with the more expensive 120 instead of a more affordable 90.
2004 GXL V6 and loving it.

      Re: Prado 120 V Prado 150

I went through the same process a couple of months back when the lease expired on my 120 D4D. Price was not an issue. I considered a LC200 and the Disco4.
The result of which was I re-leased my 120 for another three years.
For my purposes (long range, remote touring and tough offroad -with two people) the 150 provides no advantages over the 120 and in a number of areas ,key to my use, I actually think the 150 is a step backwards.
This is not to suggest that there is anything wrong with the 150, or that it would not be a good fit for a lot of people. I just found that for my needs the 120 was a better option.

Same thinking here Leachy. My lease is due 20th Sep this year. Thinking of just releasing my current 08 Diesel GXL. I'm not sold on the reduced rear cargo capacity and not being able to fit my rear rack in the back. Step backwards in that area and reduced fuel capacity.

          Same as above.
I have decided to re-leese for two yrs and wait for the mark II version to appear. If it meets the grade I'll change then.
Haven't signed up yet, so still may change my mind. Wish the decision was clearer.

HI, i deliberately traded my 2005 120 series on one of the last 120's in sept 2009. The 150 has Less fuel capacity, less space in the back, is lower, longer, wider, heavier, more expensive and has more electronic gizmos to go wrong. The 120 over the 150 is a no brainer IMO. should spark some lively debate though, lets here from a few who have made the change.

            Cheers Andrew

              Re: Prado 120 V Prado 150

              Hi All

I changed over from a 2008 TD GXL Auto to a 2010 TD GXL Auto in March.

I paid my lease out early, and got some great coin back, due to the strong resale I had on the 08 model (exc cond with 70k). I was able to sell privately, (could have sold it 20 times...).

I have to say I was always very impressed with the 120, and it met my requiremnts (highway travel/touring and towing) very well.

Initially I wasn't a fan of the 150 styling, but it has grown on me, and has improved since fitting the ARB Bar.

Driving and performance wise I find the the 2 vehicles very similar, although economy from the 150 is a little better(not that the 120 was poor).

Day to day storage in the rear is not an issue, although I do notice the difference when my 40lt Engel is in the rear - just enough room to open the lid. I am not too concerned about the reduced fuel capacity, 150lt still provides ample range. I guess we really were spoilt with 180lt.

Interior is a nice place to be, again the styling has grown on me, and it does offer some additonal handy features such as direct Ipod connection, bluetooth that actually works very well, rear camera, adjustable headlight, display items and the folding mirror function.

Overall, I loved the 120, and if it hadn't been so good, I would not have got the 150. I equally enjoy the 150, and whilst it may have a couple of shortcomings, it does have some advancements as well.

Both of these vehicles deserve appreciation, and I am sure wheteher you have a 120 or 150 that would be the case.

              Regards

                Re: Prado 120 V Prado 150

At first I wasn't a fan of how the new model looked, but like so many others as I flick through the posts, I agree that the new look is starting to grow on me, but I still don't like the rear tail lights. Its good to see that the new car price of the 150 has come down a fair bit. I saw three quotes recently and was very suprised at how much it has come down since first release.
The 150 does have some nice bells and whistles over the 120, but for me losing the small stubby 4WD lever and 30ltrs of fuel is a bit of a concern. I'll have a good think about the whole new car idea in a year or 2 when my 08 model comes up.
Or perhaps if I wait long enough the 180 series will be out by then.

                cheers

                  Re: Prado 120 V Prado 150

After visiting the dealership to have a look over a new 150 series, I must say that I think Toyota have taken a backward step on this upgrade. Whilst the 150 series boasts a new array of electronic gadgetry, I still think the 120 series is better suited to the off-road enthusiast particularly when cargo and fuel tank size are considered. The 120 series is a superb vehicle in every regard and balances refinement and comfort with great 4WD ability very well. I must admit that after sitting in the new 150, that I was somewhat disappointed. The styling both interior and exterior doesn't do a lot for me and I couldn't help thinking it was a little kitschy. I sense Toyota knows which side the bread is buttered and has designed this car to suit the biggest slice of market share who rarely take their vehicles off the blacktop. This is not a swipe at the 150 series or those who are happy with their new cars. IMHO I'll think we'll see the 120 series on the road for a while to come.

                      Re: Prado 120 V Prado 150

Last November, I sold my 03 120 and purchased the last model 09 120 GXL. In my personal opinion, I prefered the 03 model over the 09 model, only becaused of the earler auto box. Had I not had the option to buy the last 120, and only the 150 existed, I would not have purchased another Prado. IMHO I think the 150 has been re-designed too much as a "people mover", more than a 4WD. I dislike the look of the 150, inside & out, but particually the inside. The dashboard controls would look more at home in a Kia or Hyundai. Weigh this up with the lack of cargo area space and smaller fuel capasity, and for me, it's a backwards step from the 120.
As I've said, this is only my personal opinion and preferences, as I'm sure the 150 suits many other people's needs. The world would be dead boring if we all thought the same.
And ... you know what they say about opinions ....... there like aholes, everyone's got one.

Hi Bettsy, how's the new Prado going a month later? I'm at the stage of paying the residual on my 08 lease car and keeping it or sell it and get a new GXL Prado. Not to keen on the rear cargo space though on the new ones. My 40l engel lives in my current prado on a lifestyle rack.

                          Hi all,

My two cents, I have been looking at picking up a Prado for 3-4 months. I have looked at numerous 120s, and loved them all, just missed out here and there. In the end, I'm going the 150, its the 120 resale, If you want a low km late model, they are practically the same price, and i did find the 150 a bit odd to look at the start, but after ARB bull bars, snorkel and roof racks, I think they look great.

As such, have pushed the dealer, happy with the price and have now gone a 150 series in silver manual, diesel. Cant wait!!

                          Good luck choosing all,

I purchased a new VX 150 series and will admit OMG - it is a mind set change because of the 'luxury' fit out - did the standard no ice creams, dog cant go in... blah blah - now that i have pulled my head in - I am discovering the technical aspects and it is a ripper - it drives really well, parks so easily, throws mud around problem, economical for the size - one thing re bluetooth - does not work with Nokia E71 - but works really well with other phones "samsung' , blackberry etc- service cost is fixed at $210 for for 60,000kms - I had 2000 prado prior. I will add some things - nudge bar, racks maybe 12v socket at rear, but have 220v 100w inverter built in - one thing toyota should do is include the hooks for the 'deck rails' in the rear - @ $80 x 4 - it is a bit extreme (p/n 6631005040) if anyone can get some for me! Now back to cleaning up the ice cream!!!

Ah - but we are comparing 120 to 150's, not 90's to 150's... there is a major leap in the fitout and overall drive experience between a 90 and 120 series...
