    Hi guys,

Just jumping in with a question, seems like my 2015 gxl handbook states 85kg on the roof rails. One would assume if you remove the rails youd get more capacity eg Frontrunner or arb base rack (rhino pioneer seems weak as p$#@ at 66ish kg limit weighing in at 30ish kg with pop rivets)

So my question is, does anyone know yet what the roof capacity is if you remove the rails and go with the frontrunner slimline or arb baserack? These racks are rated well in excess of what the roof limit should be, but we all know what limit we need to obide by.

The Owners Manual "Aug-20-current" shows 80kgs.
Page 188. Section 4-1. Before driving.

col58 looks like they have dropped it 5kg from your 2015 to the 2020....

I stand corrected, my handbook says 80kg also in reference to the roof luggage carrier.

Curious what that number becomes when removing the rails and using an integrated system like the Front Runner, Rhino Pioneer or ARB baserack. Surely that number goes up, but to what I cant seem to find.

The 80kg (roof rails) / 100kg (without roof rails) came from the 120 Prado's roof rack rating. It sort of stuck as the dynamic roof load limit. I would assume that this takes into account CofG as well so that you don't alter the CofG so much that it becomes dangerous when cornering/swerving or driving across uneven terrain (think rock hopping/traversing across the side of a hill).

Assuming the backbone type system’s rail weights the same as factory roof rail, then dynamic (whist driving) weight limit including the actual platform itself is 80kg, so perhaps a tag over 60kg as to what you can put on.

agreed that the limit is more to do with limiting the effect of coG / dynamic load on suspension rather than how well things can be tied to roof. Therefore a “ tougher more durable” system does not improve how much you can put on…

sure people have loaded way more than manufacturers’ spec and the car “ drives well” , but I trust Toyota engineer has done their calculation with a safety margin specific to their model. Do you trust ARB, pioneer, etc to have done the testing specific to your prado. Not to mention legal liabilities when shit hits the fan
