For the price the TREDs are listed for on ebay, you may as well wait for the next supercheap 20% sale!

At that price I would stick with Maxtrax....Maxtrax are way overpriced for what they are but look better than the above cheepies...
I like the side grab handles on the maxtrax as well (good shovels) and being longer is better for recoveries.

Just another company ripping of a good idea of someone elses. They are shorter than maxtrax so you get less for your money. The maxtrax are a proven performer an original design and still the best piece of recovery equipment I have ever used. for the extra few bucks I would buy the proven brand.

            Cheers Andrew

I wouldnt call them a rip off....similar idea of plastic ramps but the design is different...i would call it competition and we need more of it here otherwise the companies like maxtrax can charge what they like and rip us off

I agree to disagree. This is an obvious rip-off. Hope Brad sues them. I hate the chinese rip off attitude and how it deprives innovators from giving it a go and then reaping the rewards to which they are entitled. If companies like this all over the world were not trying to copy and pinch his market we would be paying a LOT less.

Again, so all readers are aware, I don't know Brad personally but he is and remains an avid supporter of PP GTG's and as the proud owner of 2 sets I am very happy with his product and the price (which resellers charge). They have saved me a great deal more than $300 as the tide comes in on more than one occasion

Firstly i have no affiliation with this company, hadnt even heard of them until reading this post, and i like MAXTRAX and other well thought out products, it just got me wound up that all you folks dont read the ad, shoot your mouths off and trample on the little guy trying to break into the market....might help if you get some facts first eh?

                    So in response mlc

This is an obvious rip-off. Hope Brad sues them.

Really? yes well lets sue everyone then...perhaps the developer of the original Aluminium Sand Ladders should sue Brad for stealing his idea of using portable ramps as recovery devices? As far as i can see, and please do correct me if i'm wrong, but the principal is exactly the same.... the MAXTRAX and all these other plastic ladders are a vast improvement on the original - not something new!

I hate the chinese rip off attitude and how it deprives innovators from giving it a go and then reaping the rewards to which they are entitled.

Again the MAXTRAX isnt an innovation just a vast improvement over the original as mentioned before...and if you read the actual advertisement before assuming it's all 'Chinese', you would see that it is designed and manufactured in Australia by Australians...probably all wearing Akubras and singing Advance Australia Fair whilst they work too.... see below

"Designed and manufactured in Australia from specially-engineered polyolefin material, TREDs can handle intense levels of torque, flex, weight and impact."

If companies like this all over the world were not trying to copy and pinch his market we would be paying a LOT less.

Really? so let me clarify...if there is one manufacturer of a product and no competition the price will come down and the product will improve yes? Please please explain to me how this business model works...better yet please give me an example of where this has worked in the past because for the past 2000 years or so an increase in competition has always led to lower prices...basic economics.

Look im not bashing MAXTRAX or Brad and maybe my first post about being ripped off was a bit strong, but i (and many others) believe we are paying over the odds for alot of our gear (good as it is) so a bit of healthy competition is welcomed.

To the OP i say if you want to try them go ahead, and let us know how they perform.

To the new guy its good to welcome another home grown small business to the industry.

                      Whoa, easy tiger.

To clarify "chinese rip off attitude" was not implying they were actually chinese. They are reknowned for it but don't have exclusivity on such actions. It occurs all over the world. My apologies, perhaps I should have punctuated this better to read properly.

Secondly, breaching copyright does not favour avoidance of a monopoly. There are alternatives (legimate competition) to MaxTrax and I actually bought some. I can't recall the name but they are black pieces interlinked by wire and sold through ARB. After they failed miserably (in my opinion) I bought my first set of MaxTrax and never looked back.

Despite the differing views on this particular product we actually share common viepoints on competition and supporting Aussie made as the first ones were made in WA I believe.

I still maintain with very limited experience in copyright infringment that these are a rip off of MaxTrax.

I must plead ignorance (and suffer the embarrassment as a result) to the Aluminium Sand Ladders. I cannot comment as I have never heard of them or seen them. I would be disappointed if MaxTrax were similar.

Finally on this point "Really? so let me clarify...if there is one manufacturer of a product and no competition the price will come down and the product will improve yes? Please please explain to me how this business model works...better yet please give me an example of where this has worked" in the past because for the past 2000 years or so an increase in competition has always led to lower prices...basic economics.
I did not say monopolys create lower prices. I said muppets that copy unlawfully drive up prices. Maxtrax HAVE legitimate competitors, this muppet is not one of them.

I will say this in respect to your statement. I have created companies from scratch that have made fantastic profits for more than 10 years. (one with over $1 mill profit per year after tax), I consult to business on getting it right in a variety of circumstances, and I wind up businesses that get it wrong, or restructure them so they get it right moving forward. You describe a position called apathy, a well known way to make a small company from a large one.

Putting barriers to entry to one side, the position you describe will see the market create competition very fast and thereby bring to an end the monoploy. I cannot give you an example of your hyperthetical because there isn't one. That said, it was not my proposition to start with.

My proposition was and remains, "If I have large legal bills defending my product, I must pass that cost, at least in part, on to the end user"

I knowyou don't need examples because again we are singing from the same hymn book but an example would be in the late 80's (I think, its too long ago now) the government decided that consumers need to be aware of there rights re loans. The Banks prepare documents advising us of our rights so we know and are better informed. Sweeeeet!, oh, I nearly forgot, loan application fees jumped to $600, coincidence? I think not.

Government introduces a carbon tax, raw materials for my house jump, coincidence, I think not. (coincidence that I am really pissed, I think not either)
BHP gets fined a few million dollars for lax waste policies, you know the answer...

                      Cheers

Sorry didnt mean to come over all angry...just slightly miffed

I see what you are saying about protecting the legalities and sure that would incur a cost that would have to go somewhere but i guess ive seen too many monopolies gouge us relentlessly because they have no competition and can. Where MD's sit around in a board room and instead of saying 'whats a fair price' discuss 'whats the maximum we can charge'. Ah well capitalism at work.

To clarify about sand ladders, these have been around for years...usually spied tied onto the roof racks of old Camel Cup Landrovers. Google them and you will see what i mean. They are the original old metal versions of the MAXTRAX...just simple alloy or steel ladders with cut outs etc to make them grip into whatever you are trying to get traction in. They also quite often used to come in orange....We used to use them in the forces (except those ones were painted green ) so i maintain my point about them being (a very good) improvment.

And to end this debate on a positive and educational note....... a top tip when using these sorts of things. When bogged in a large deep area of sand tie the each of the sand ladders/MAXTRAX to your vehicle with a long(5m) length of para cord. Make sure to lay it out so it wont get tangled in anything. Now when you finally get moving and head to firm ground the things come with you and dont have to trek back to retrieve them...just make sure you dont use elastic...lol

really big posts aside (very true and well written might I add ) in laymen's terms the maxtrax look better, are longer/better have a better design with good handles built in so they work as a shovel AND if bought on special are the SAME price as said ebay copy's.......NUFF said.

Not sure how long Maxtrax have been around but I remember in a former life many moons ago in the UK in the fifties when I was knee high to a garden gnome my old man was a mechanic and took the company VW pickup truck home. Sometimes he had in the back a big pair of black heavy duty plastic boards just like the Maxtrax only much longer, wider and thicker obviously to use on the bogged big trucks. I’ve seen them in use many a time in the pommy/Irish weather. And these looked like they were donkeys years old. So, nothing new under the sun. I think only the stud pattern can been patented.

                              Cheers, Jim.
