  • Our Victorian Alps trip 2006

    Hi all,

Like Embi, my wife and I enjoyed a trip through the Victorian Alps between Easter and ANZAC Day.

We camped for a couple of nights in Kosciuszko National Park, with temperatures warmer than our home here in the Mountains. The outlook predicted a cold front coming through later in the week about when we had planned crossing the border into Victoria.

We crossed the border into Victoria south of Jindabyne on the Barry Way on the Thursday and headed for Mackillop's Bridge on the Snowy River for the night. Another warm(ish) night.

Broke camp the next day (Friday) at 0800 and a cold wind started up and it began spitting rain as we left. As we were climbing out of the Snowy River valley outside temperature was dropping like a stone. When it got to 3°C I was just about to say to my wife "I reckon we are in for some snow if we're lucky" when she said, "Hey, look at those funny slow falling raindrops"! It started sleeting at about 700mASL! Cool :!:

By the time we reached 800mASL it was snowing quite heavily and was settling on the ground. This image was taken at about 800mASL:

We drove across the Benambra/Limestone Track toward Benambra and Omeo, we were the first vehicle through, it was great driving through virgin snow up to a foot deep in parts.

A wallaby used the track before us!

After lunch in Omeo we headed north on the Bogong High Plains Road, there wasn't as much snow up there, despite the higher elevation.

This is Wallace's Hut, a short hike off the Bogong High Plains Road south of Falls Creek

We had a fantastic drive through the snow, spent nearly 5 hours driving in it. The Toyota performed flawlessly, the Cooper ATR tyres were great at carving their way through the snow, even though we didn't have any snow chains.

Mount Bogong (Victoria's highest mountain) from Mount Beauty

We stayed in Mount Beauty for a few nights, no more snow, but had fun exploring the bush around the place.

Headed north and camped near Tumut, before heading back through Canberra via the Brindabellas. I've always wanted to visit the Brindabellas but after the scenery we saw in Victoria it was a bit of a let-down. Someone had dumped WAY too much gravel on the road and the going was tough, more tiring than snow driving! After we crossed the border into the ACT the road turned to powder. Boy it's dry down there, I though it was bad at the family's farm out west! What a dust bowl.

I will post some more photos when I get time.

    Cheers all,

    Drew.
