  • Hot shower, Heat exchanger, Helton, Glind, Twine

Hi all, just thought i'd throw out the question, has anyone fitted a heat exchanger? Done plenty of searches but doesn't look like many Prado'ers have fitted a heat exchanger. Just bought the Helton unit, hand made in Aus. Looks like a solid unit, made out of copper inside and out. Looking for some photo's where they have been installed and whether it was in seiries or parallel?

I bought the red unit which has a lot more copper coil for the fresh water, making it hotter than the other unit so I am thinking I will install it in parallel with a brass tap inline to reduce the flow of coolant through the unit for when I don't want the water so hot. Another option is to instal a tap in the shower line to reduce or increase flow time through the exchanger, increasing and decreasing heat, but this changes the flow rate also and not too keen on that.

    Post long enough?

    Dan.

Not yet but interested in seeing your pics and hearing how you get on.
I too have been eying off the helton, but was thinking of purchasing just the standalone HE and puchasing a shurflo pump rather than the cheapie pump they supply.
What pump have you teamed the HE up with?
I believe that helton recommend installing the unit vertical, rather then the twine or glind where you can install horizontally? Interested in hearing more thoughts on this.

My red Helton heat exchanger is sitting on my desk next to me, just have to find time to install it, I have bought a flowjet pump to couple with the HE. My plan at this stage is to heat the water first and then repump it for a shower, read heaps about HE and lots of people have difficulty getting the temp correct.

As for where to mount it, not 100% sure but got a few ideas, keep an eye on my rig build in the next few weeks.

      Cheers Andrew

The Flojet pump is Model: 03526-144, 11 LPM max, 50psi, safe to run dry, self priming. The main reason I chose this pump is because it is the same as the one I run in the camper trailer.

Shower rose is from local building supply company, no bunnings near here! This is really just an upgrade from my air operated roof rack mounted shower system that didn't work out as great as I had hoped, so tank and shower rose are being recycled, different heating and pumping system is the aim for me.

          Cheers Andrew

I had one on my last 120. Found it excellent as a water heater but wasted too much water stuffing around to get the temperature right. Heating then showering is probably a more efficient way to go but double handling and time consuming.

I tried a Coleman gas unit...waste of time. Tried the gas powered aqua cube, way more reliable but dosent get as hot but if your starting with water above 15 degrees it works a treat

Other alternative is the portable Kimberley diesel unit...but so many $$$$$

Not only lots more $$, but alot more space required to cart around especially if your lacking a camper too.
So AJ, looking forward to your build up just don't patent any of your clever ideas as then I might have to come up with something on my own, and who knows how that will turn out (refer to the quality of DIY in modification of the year thread! )

I understand that this solution may not be as portable as the others but something im looking at implementing once I get my camper trailer:

I havn't got a pump yet but i do have one of those cheapie showers already. I was thinking about taking off the pump that comes with it and putting on a bilge pump... until i can get around to getting a better one for under the bonnet.

A few people have had problems with getting heat right, the brass tap in-line allows you to control the amount of heat generated. In theory anyway, ill let you know how it goes in practice. I intend on making little marks on it for temp indicators to stop the stuffing around later. Hopefully works out.

We have a Twine which we purchased about 11 years ago. This is how we use it:

1 Fill a 20 litre container with water.
2 Suck water out of container and through Twine
3 Put water back into container - this is via a Y shaped connector at the outlet where shower normally connects and having two hoses, one to shower which is turned off and valve on the other which is open
4 We have a temperature gauge on the hose into container (from Dick Smith but I would not think they sell them now - normally used for disabled people to check on shower temperatures) and once the water is 47C, it is ready to use (yes, this is hot but it will cool - see next point)
                    5 Turn off engine
6 Close the valve on the container hose and have a shower. The water temperature will now be about 40C as it comes through, although in cold temperatures it drops quick

Much easier to regulate than using heater controls.

I have got a Twine in my Prado and it has been good on the few occasions it has been used. If you reduce the flow of fresh water in to the heat exchanger the hotter the water coming out,the more time in the exchanger the hotter the water. The way we you the system and to save water is to wet your self down, turn of the water ,soap yourself up and the rinse off. When you turn the water back on to rinse of is when you have to be very careful as the water has been sitting in the exchanger for a while and heats up and you cop a rush of very hot water initially.the flow of water is controlled by a slide valve in the shower rose.open up the valve for a faster flow and the water is in the exchanger for less time and so doen’t heat up as much, slow the flow and water is in the exchange longer and you get hotter water

We shower using the same system Quicky, wet down, turn off water, shampoo and soap up, then wash off. This is why I think heating the water first and then repumping it is the easiest way to go, different if you were drawing water straight from a large supply and you keep it running, but usually we allow 20lts for 3 people to shower.

I m looking at a flojet or similar genuine knockoff on ebay. Should I be looking for higher LPM output or PSI? Im thinking more PSI will obviously give you more pressure. Im looking a something like 4.3LPM with 80PSI. This sounds like it should be enough but there are some of these pumps that do about 11LPM and 35PSI. Who has any of these and what advice?

                          Thanks

I had this system in my last car and will be installing one in my 120 when I get a chance. I hooked mine up to the water coming out of the heater box and just adjusted the temp with the heater controls in the car. Set aircon to cold and a cold shower. On hot it was close to making a cup of tea. Best investment when doing lots of camping with kids especially in winter.
