Not sure what the big deal is.

I thought it was pretty common for cars to use fake leather in various spots, nearly every car I've looked at including super expensive luxury cars use fake leather. I have an older Honda that has fake leather on the back of seats and door trims.

The only area that it really makes a difference is on the seats, steering wheel and arm rests. I'd be more concerned about the quality of the leather in most cars.

Im surprised they stopped at Toyota. All manufacturers do it with only a handful of european manufacturers using ALL leather in seats. Ford are the worst that i have seen and they don't mind stinging you either.

We used to fit a lot of kits to brand new cars from the dealer and they were ALL leather, every single panel on the seat was real leather and a lot of car dealers wouldn't offer the factory leather because they knew for half the price we could fit real leather to all the seats and door inserts and the customer would be happier.

Also, just to clarify there is no such thing as pleather of faux leather. It's actually called Vinyl, pretty simple.

this is another media beat up on toyota.

car manufacturers have been doing this for years - all marketed as leather. the cars i've owned all had the fake stuff in the high wear areas.

The high wear areas are certainly not the back of the seat, they are the faces of the seat on the cushion and squab and they are always real leather, it's the bolster sides and back of the seats that are vinyl.

I think it stinks, my "leather accented" seats have vinyl on the sides of the seat squab and were badly worn. I replaced it with real leather, which is what TMC should have used in the first place. To say "all manufacturers do it" isn't justification for false advertising.

Incidentally, we have no such problems with the actual leather upholstery in my wife's Alfa Romeo, but Italians know a thing or two about style that the Japanese will never fathom. A pity they can't build something reliable...

So you'd like a Prameo or an Alfrado or similar combination?

Yep, a Prado with interior trim by Alfa would do nicely. A Toyalfa Pradmeo perhaps? Let's not include any electrical components by Alfa and add the exhaust note from the Alfa V6 and we may be onto a winner!

Otherwise, you could spend about $2000 and have the interior completely retrimmed in real leather. After applying the $200 voucher on your next new Toyota purchase, you are only $1800 out of pocket!

No such thing as synthetic leather, it's called vinyl and is inferior to leather for strength and wear characteristics.

There is a fully synthetic material called alcantara. Sometimes used by Lamborghini and other European manufacturers because it is lighter than leather. Like fully synthetic oil, alcantara is considerably more expensive than leather but also superior in many ways.
