  • Should I use Stainless steel bolts, washers and nuts?

    Hi there
    Previously I had issues with my bolts holding stone guards on my bull bar, and many other little bolts here and there rusting away. I am thinking about replacing most of these bolts with stainless steel 316 bolts, washers and nuts everywhere I can (just for general attachment of things M6 and M8, not for high tensile duties). Is this going to be an issue? Could it provoke more intensive corrosion on the chassis, or bull bar (kind of galvanic corrosion), or should this be ok? I do not drive on beaches a lot, but live relatively close to the sea.

    Its a problem if you dont use something like this. Its what is used in marine applications .

      from other hotrod type things Ive played with stainless steel bolts into metal cagenuts are a pain in the arse to undo after a while and the shear off value is no where near that of a high tensile bolt the ginger beer that was helping me with an old holden project told me to piss off all the stainless bolts I put on that.
      I got myself some Big Horn Maxxis and was telling my landrover lover mate he said what size did you get I told him 265/75/16 he said I didn't know they came that small.

        Just take them out, coat them with fish oil spray and put them back in. No more corrosion issue with your existing bolts. The fish oil will clean them right up too and make them look new. It'll protect them for a good many years.

        Ive completely rust proofed the underbody and inside my chassis rails with cans upon cans of fish oil hitting everything at every angle and repeatedly until it was dripping off and out of everywhere. Started at the front and worked my way back. Did inside the doors too. I left car parked unused for a fortnight to give it sometime to cure. Never had a spec of rust or even tea staining. I still clean the underbody and inside the doors methodically after a beach trip, but it gives me extra piece of mind. It saved me over $400 from getting it professionally done and I firmly believe it did a more thorough job of it.

        I just had to put up with smelling a bit fishy for 2 or 3 days because I got a fair bit of it on me.

            Mine are all stainless, little bit of medium thread locker. Never lost one, no rust, no problems. Except the last time I had a service by Broome Toyota and they lost all the stainless and put shitty cheap bolts in. Not happy and i told them so.

              I used M8 SS Button head bolts on mine. No issues to date.

                I use stainless steel bolts everywhere I can but I coat them with drylube (available at any auto shop) or a squirt of Inox. If under the body I spray with Lanox (Inox/Lanox available at Bunnings). I have never had a problem with them corroding or galvanic action. I do not use SS bolts where High Tensile bolts are required but I do also lubricate them with the above.
