  • 150 Tow Points... are they ok to use?

    hey all

Long time lurker, first time poster

Random (and probably basic) question, but are the factory tow points (the steel loops at the front left and x2 at the rear) rated/ OK for towing? Ive read elsewhere that these are only designed for tie towns on a truck etc but not meant for towing/ pulling out of bogged situations etc?

If they are rated- does anyone know exactly what to? (I often use the front point to to get a pull on the sand when Ive retrieved my 1.5T boat from a beach launch)

If they are not rated- does anyone have any recommendations on how to replace these with something stronger and where to buy them/ what type?

    thanks in advance!

Not rated for snatching or winching. Best place to get rated recovery points is a 4WD accessory shop like ARB or TJM etc. For the relative small cost it is much safer.

If you're going to tow stuff from the rear, just pull your towball out and put your rope/ strap through the hitch pin. That'll work until you get a recovery point which go for about 20-30 bucks at supacenter and are well worth it. Front wise you're better off with proper rated points, but if you don't have them then make sure you use a bridle strap to even the pull out. (obviously never ever use a towball for anything recovery related.)

Awesome, thanks mate. Thats the back end sorted... but I was also after something from the front (for someone to pull me out of the beach when I have a boat attached on a sand retreival etc... I have a "soft" factory Toyota bull bar on the front- most of the front facing tow points I have seen need a decent roo bar to attach to- are there any alternatives with the set up I have?

              cheer again for the info!

The roadsafe ones attach straight to your chassis rails-As do most recovery points. The photos might make them look like they go onto the bulbar, but realistically you want them bolted to the strongest part of the car if you're going to be putting the sort of forces into it that you will when recovering something that's bogged to the door sills in mud.

What year 150? The new TJM bullbar has rated recovery points built in... $2500 might be a bit much just to get recovery points

I doubt it from what darren was describing regards RnD... but definitely a question for TJM.

I had the 'roadsafe' ones, they were pretty good from my perspective. a little fiddly to install. Definitely don't recover on standard points. those are only transport tie downs.

I recently had the T13 Outback installed on my rig and the explanation from TJM regarding recovery points was "We haven't built them into the 150 Prado series bars as it's a different design to the Hilux (obviously) and without lifting the vehicle they caused clearance issues. We recommend using Roadsafe recovery points."

So I did just that.. I lifted my rig and installed the Roadsafe ones.
