Straps will do the job man. We've all seen heaps of people doing it and making trips around Australia with no failures.
hat tends to happen is that they come loose after a while, they can snap and the next time you brake, a 20kg weight is hurled at the car that pulled out in front.

Just think about what you can afford and what you're doing. If it's a long dessert trip you gotta think rough roads. whatever you do needs to be strong enough to last.

Have a think about a boat fuel tank as well. they come in huge selection of sizes, have multiple tie down points and are often strapped in place.

Consider carrying the jerrycans empty for the most part, then only fill them when your required range exceeds onboard capacity. Use them when there is room to fit them in the tanks to minimize the time spent with the extra weight on the roof.

Thanks..the boat tank is a great idea..heading up the Great Central Road , then north on the David Carnegie Rd , then west on the Gunbarell , then NW to Mt Augustus and the South via unsealed roads back to Perth

As said, as soon as you can get the fuel off your roof and make sure you don't exceed the weight limit of your roof and racks.

            Cheers, Terry.

If you have no passengers in the rear consider taking out the middle and last rows of seats. Saves about 90 kg. You can then ratchet strap the jerries down across where the middle row of seats used to be. You use the seat belt mounts and bolts which held the seats in to attach the ratchet straps. Keeps the weight low and as said above don't fill them until the last fuel stop before going remote. It costs a bit more but is safer..
