  • V6 Petrol across Simpson Desert Rig Road

Anyone completed the rig road across the Simpson in a 4.0 V6 petrol via poeppels and the K1?

I've looked at various discussion on here re fuel consumption across the Simpson but can't seem to see anything specific to the rig road. My research shows consumption at anywhere between 19l/100k's and 26l/100k's.

The distance between Birdsville and Mt Dare is about 720km. 26 litres per 100k's gives me a usage of 188 litres. I'll be carrying two 20l jerries so will have a total of 220 litres (180 tanks + 40 jerries).

i know there is currently a bypass at Eyre creek that adds 60k's, that gives me 780k's between fuel stops with a usage at 203 litres (at the 26l/100k calculation).

If i average the consumption at 22.5l/100k's i get a usage of 175 litres. I'm not towing.

Wondering if this is feasible based on others experience?

    Cheers
    Scott

Dont own a petrol but you need to keep in mind you cant use all of your 180l tank(s)

you have a reserve in each tank of 10l I guess ?? Which you cant use

A 120 owner would be able to give more accurate info

You should be able to access all 180L in the 120 series, I have driven my V6 until near empty and topped up with more than 181L at the bowser.
The 10L is in the expansion chamber, which is in addition to the 180L usable capacity.

Your fuel calculations seem very reasonable to me, 220L total fuel is certainly feasible for your intended route, with some margin in reserve.
I have done the Simpson previously in a petrol 80 series 4.5L 6cyl manual, which would burn more fuel than a V6 Prado, carrying 225L total fuel.
We covered 708km and consumed 187L of fuel, giving an average consumption of 26.5L/100km. Our route was from Oodnadata to Birdsville,
Covering a mix of French Line, WAA Line and some Rig Rd, with probably more soft sand dunes than what you intend to do.

        It's a fantastic trip, enjoy!

2062km vs 705km over the same time period, sounds like fun to me

Oodnadata to Birdsville was a leisurely 5 days for my crossing

Incorrect. You can use down to around 1 litre left in a 120 Petrol. Done it a few times.

Back in 2003 I did the Rig Road in my 90 series V6. The distance between Birdsville and Mount Dare was 779 km. I had 1/4 in main tank and 1/4 in sub tank left. That means I had used about 120 litres meaning about 15.3 litres per 100 km. Very loaded up as well.

Thats some crazy , mileage K&M. some people dont get that on the bitumen. . I for one dont get that mileage at the pub!
But that is my mileage around town. I just fit headers and im interested to see if that helps a bit or not .

As fuels consumption is based on many factors the best we can do is provide the best circumstances . Help the vehicle with what you can ,like, aerodynamics, good plugs , good strong air flow from your air filter to shove down that chamber to create as much combustion possible . Ive have always wondered about the the air filters . the original material one cleaned vs the replacement paper ones .They are cheap but seem to work ok. Not sure what is best in the dessert in this area.

How did you go, Scott? Would be interested to know what your final consumption was in l/100km and what tyre pressures you chose for the desert crossing.

Sorry All, I didn't even think about providing an update until today - very, very slack of me!!

We ended up going Poeppels, K1 and WAA line. My consumption was 22/23l per 100K, so maybe round that off to 22.5l per 100K. Seemed to be as low as 19l per 100K on some of the easier sections. I was very happy with that.

I ran 19psi on the front and about 20psi on the rear. Two kids, wife, 110 litres of water, 220 litres of petrol and as little camping gear as I could get away with. Based on my calculations I would have been over GVM until I got rid of some fuel and water. Wife and kids had to stay

Got stuck once on some of the big dunes towards the end of the WAA line but that was driver error, no sugarcoating!

The V6 petrol loved those dunes and for the most part it was a fairly conservative crossing subject to a few bigger dunes. It was fun, I would go back tomorrow.

                            Cheers
                            Scott
