  • Long term storage of Prado

Hi Guys, Because of the COVID19 virus the prado hasn't moved, and I don't expect it to for some time (working 100% from home). Its on a trickle charger to maintain the battery (as is my motorcycle as well), but I'm wondering if I should do anything else such as putting it up on stands to get the tyres off the ground (also not too sure if I should place the front stands under the lower control arms somehow).
Would be interested on some opinions on this.
    Cheers, Eddie

Just put an extra 5-10 psi in the tyres, stops flat spots. We do it to the race cars overnight.

Also just start it every now and then.

My Prado is left for 7-8 months every year, I take most of the weight off the tyres by placing it on axle stands, fill the tank to help keep condensation at a minimum, and disconnect the battery.
I recharge the battery before I use it and have done this for 5 years since new without any issues. Luckily disconnecting the battery doesn't cause a problem with the Chinese head unit or anything else losing memory so it is a simple matter of reconnecting and starting as normal.
Neighbours have offer to run it for me which (personal opinion here) is the worst thing you could possibly do to an engine, ie start up, rev its nuts off and stop before it is up to working temperature, so I would strongly advise against this.

I stored my boy’s car when he worked O/S for long periods.
I did exactly as suggested by JohnLynn.
Only suggestion I’d make is to ensure there’s no chance of vermin.
Mice etc love to nest on the engine and can get inside via the smallest openings.
A couple of car covers will keep the dust off.

Wasn’t recommending that, but to start the engine occasionally and let it warm up (sensibly) keeps seals and lines happier.

i usually start the race car every now and then (Since can’t use it atm) and slowly warm it up till engine oil temp is up, not just coolant temp and then exhaust is also warm so won’t create condensation and rust out..

Could just take it out for a 30-45min drive once a fortnight, even at night if that’s all the time you have. Don’t have to go far from home.

With camping off the table at the moment, mine is sitting idle most of the time, but I try and use it once every week or two for a 20km or so journey. I did once leave it for 4 weeks on holiday and it was fine, left the battery connected the whole time and still had enough juice to start. A few PSI more in the tyres will keep them round (bit like on trailers). And if you're leaving it for a long time and you can't cycle the handbrake, consider chocking the wheels and leaving the handbrake off (or just leave in gear/park) if possible.

Thanks Guys, Alot of good info. Increase tyre pressure is a great idea. Will start it up occasionally and let it warm up (always treat my engines with Nulon long term engine treatment to hopefully protect from startup wear if not used all the time, i.e. Prado, Motorcycle, Generator). Vermin getting into the car, now that's a worry, think I will put some baits in the garage (don't see many mice, but trap a few rats come through the fence to raid the garden at certain times of the year).

Forgot to mention, I always have the car on a smart charger (CTEK), and Bike (Optimate coming up 7 years and battery still going strong).

EddieF 7 years is pretty decent! I got 7 years out of my car's OEM battery (2010 Lancer), but then only 2 years out of a Supercheap replacement. Now got a Yuasa in there so we'll see how long that goes.

The Prado has a RACQ battery in it that's been there since 2017 and all good so far.
