  • Starting Battery

Original battery is in its death throws on my 2016 2.8. Just on 4 years old it has done 2 serious long desert trips with the attendant corrugations. It often sits for 3 or4 days then gets a couple of half hour runs. Not ideal and the current lockdownhas further reduced its use and the colder weather is not helping. I put it on the charger for a few nights but the charge slips away to about 11.5v over 2 or 3 days. The deep cycle aux. sits at about 12.7v.
The question is what are the recommendations for a good quality starting battery which won't shake itself to death outback? Suggestions please.

Has anyone fitted one of the bigger batteries -720+ CCA which are about 305 mm long into a 2.8? This is about 25 mm longer than standard. There is the space there but a few hoses may get in the way. Are Optima red tops worth the extra money? Any experiences? Bad experiences with any brands?

I would look at a Yellow Top Optima rather than the Red Top, same construction but you get the deep cycle warranty. Yellow Tops usually have ample CCA to meet starting demands. My experience with Optima batteries both in 4wds and boats has been brilliant. 1 died after 9 years but that was my error in that I left it in the boat with the electronics on and completely drained it.

Hi. I have not fitted a bigger battery yet to my 2016 GX; & I presume you mean N70ZZ size. I have N70ZZL4WD Century as second battery; but I did test out fitting it to main battery area and it fits OK. Will need a better tray; although standard tray is plastic. Also recommend brace it to the front cross member.

I have a deep cycle auxiliary battery - 105ah. Good to know that the 305 mm ones will fit. The aux. Is braced - TJM tray - excellent..The new main will be braced.
Some of the batteries I am seeing are calcium like supercharge batteries.. Will these get fully charged at the 2.8s 13.7 or 13.8 initial charge rate?

Couldn't wait any longer. I got a 695 CCA heavy duty truck battery from local reputable battery specialist. $269. SSB battery. SS70LM It is the same size as the original and fitted the existing tray and weighs 18.7.kg. The next size up would have required a new longer tray to fit its 305 mm length and weighed another 2.5 kg. The original battery had a dying[rapidly!] cell. We will see how it goes.
By the way if you think that the batteries in your door bopper are playing up [1632 number] they may be -easy fix. BUT as I have learnt over the last few weeks it could also be your main battery dying. The dying battery wouldn't allow me to use the touch buttons to open the door and I had to hold the bopper to the start button for any action. All perfect now.
Interestingly he told me they were century agents for over 20 years but gave them up because of constant warranty issues like leaks and short lives due to widely varying quality control due batteries coming out of different factories all over Asia. Ditto the exides they used to sell.

Just a question didn’t really want to make a new thread, as the prado isn’t getting driven as much now can I keep the battery terminals connected to the car and have a trickle charger on it ? Or do I need to remove the battery terminals for the car to charge the battery ?

Again another question a bit off the topic, if the battery terminals are disconnected for a while, does a 150 series a Prado need the radio re-coded for it to work again?
