  • What does anybody tow with 150 series diesel Prado

    Hi Everyone
im thinking of doing a lap around Australia and have looked into caravans at shows. It seems there is very little my 2013 Prado can tow as it’s only rated to 2500kg. Interested to hear what other Prado owners tow? More keen on a van than camper trailer but if that’s all I suppose I’ll have to with one.
Cheers in advance for any replies

I went the other way and swapped out to a 200 cruiser. No regrets at all. The Prado towing was struggling.

Mine is a 90 series petrol (auto tranny) but it tows my 1000kg camper trailer (1983 Jayco Swan) no problems, and that includes a car packed to the roof with camping gear and extra 'wife stuff' they always want to bring along. Got up Cunningham's Gap (QLD) with no drama. You do get the expect drop in performance when towing but handling is unaffected plus braking is very good (electric brakes on the trailer).

Have seen other 90 series at campsites in both petrol and diesel towing a lot bigger trailers - caravans, but a lot of them have been older ones that probably weigh a lot less than their modern counterparts. I'd be happy towing 1500kg with mine but would hesitate to go any more despite the 2500kg rating!

How much caravan do you really need? 2500kg gets you a lot of van and choice. It is only once you go for off road vans that weight sky rockets. If you are mainly sticking to the tar with your van there is a lot of choice around 2000kg. 20 years ago everyone towed with 60 and 80 series landcruisers also with 2500 kg limits.

I tow a 2 tonne camper trailer with my 2016/2017 Prado GX. It handles the camper well, although I'm considering getting a ATF radiator fitted. You need to hold the 6-speed trans back in 4th to keep the ATF consistently under 100C.

I am not advocating doing the big circle with a camper-trailer though: the set-up and pack-up times would eat into your days when you want to be moving. We've been looking at full off-road vans for the Prado and there are a few in the 2000 to 2500kg ATM range. Not lots, but a few. If you don't want to go to a full off-road van, there are more options because they are structurally lighter.

yeah I wanted an off road van and agree the weight sky rockets but if doing off grid the lighter vans wouldn’t cope. Thanks for your reply

Have a look at the caravan camping website or app. Select off road vans and put in tare weight of say 2000kg. This will give you a good idea of what is around .2000kg will allow 500kg of water and assorted crap and still be under weight. Be aware that cops inspectors etc do stop vans and weigh them.

404pug Can you drop a hint or two more on where this "caravan camping website" is? It sounds ideal for me but I've searched high and low and can't find what you're referring to. Thanks in advance.

                    GeeWhizz,
                    I think 404pug is referring to caravancampingsales.com.au

                    Jezza,
I have a 2019 Prado. It is rated to tow 3,000kg and my van has a ATM of 2,704kg. I get it loaded to 2.6 to 2.7 t with its water tanks full. I would like more power, wouldn't we all, but I am satisfied. Tows better than old Series 90.
I have arranged to get a GVM upgrade (next week) as I am a bit over trying to manage the weight issues to not to go over its OEM GVM. I will be able to move more of our weight to the vehicle, be legal and notionally be more stable with a heavier tow vehicle. Not that our whole rig is unstable now, our van tracks well.
A GVM upgrade is something worth considering if your van's weight is pushing things towards the max limitations.

We tow a Jayco 13.42 outback behind our Prado 150 2.8 manual. Van is around 1300kg empty and tows nicely with pretty good fuel consumption.

I wouldn't want more than 1500kg empty as I like to have a decent weight margin, not keen on towing close to max regardless of vehicle....but that's just me

I tow a Jayco Hawk off road with my 2010 Prado 1KD. 920 Tare. 1270 fully loaded. Even though this is considered light by todays standards, you can definitely feel it and I wouldn't want to tow much more as it does put a lot more stress on the motor but like the previous comment, that's just my personal opinion as I like to play it safe. I tow in 4th at 2500rpm on the highway.

There are certainly off-road vans within your tow limit, but they tend to go for a lot of coin, at least new. Expect over 100K. The pick of the bunch for me was a Kimberly Karavan, which you can get for under 100K but the Eco-Suite (more off-grid potential) is well over. Current model has a tare around 1800kg and an ATM close to 2500kg. There are a number of older s/h versions on that sales website, but they may have a lower ATM and need it upgraded.

My second pick would have probably been a Complete Campsite Exodus. AOR also make off-road hybrids. Anything genuinely off-road and under 2500kg is going to be a hybrid of some sort.
