  • New to Prado - roof rack advice

I am awaiting my first ever new car, the Prado GXL arriving next month. I want to get a roof rack that stays on the car and is slim line. The ARB baserack or the Rhino Platform look good. Anyone have any advice??. Mainly using for Surfboards, Pod for longer trips and a roof top tent (occasionally). I am a city driving mum of boys who needs convenience and to fit in a carport that isn't huge. Thanks in advance.

If you get the Rhino racks Vortex, make sure the end caps actually lock in place. I had a replacement of racks with my purchase.

Congratulation on the new Prado - great choice!

For those uses (expect for maybe the roof top tent I guess - I don't know anything about them really), an ARB Baserack or the Rhino Platform is probably overkill. You may be better with just cross bars rather than a "platform".

But if you are getting a platform style rack, I'd go for the ARB Baserack - see my recent post for the reasoning: https://www.pradopoint.com.au/forum/...927#post758927

Platforms are overkill for your use case. Cross bars are enough. Even the ones that attach to the rails.

Are the Rhino rack cross bars easy to install yourself? Buying a set myself to install to GXL (onto the roof rails)

Dead easy. By the way, the Toyota ones are made by Rhino and often cheaper. Check them out first.

Ok great. I'll save myself the $90 install fee and give it a go. Rhino racks vortex cross bars are $350 without install. How much are the toyota ones? I like Rhino racks so unless toyota ones significantly cheaper I'll stick with the RR.

I have Rhino cross bars on the rails of my 2019 GXL. Plenty strong enough for surf craft. When I was younger, I often carried heaps of surf stuff on lesser bars than the Rhino bars. No problems. For the carport space, my Rhino bars are 50mm higher than the roof rails of my GXL. My daughter did the fitting of similar Rhino bars to the roof rails of her car.

The Toyota and rhino ones are identical. Go with the cheaper one.

Fitted the Rhino Rack Vortex cross bars today on my 2021 GXL. Pretty easy to do as advised above. Putting the rubber strips in was a bit fiddly and required cutting to size. Saved myself the $90 install fee. Also measured the height of car to top of roof racks which was at 1.95metre. So I easily fit in all the undercover car parks nearby which have 2.1metre limits. I bought the racks for $350 from ARB as I needed them this weekend but have noticed a1roofracks are doing them for $315 including delivery. They are based in Newcastle so 2 to 3 business days delivery time.

I go cross bars so I can wash my roof, it would drive me nuts not being able to clean under a platform

Washing under a platform is not a big issue, I use a Sabco 2 sided flip mop from Bunnings which easily slides under the platform.
