  • What TURBO is this part for?

I own a 2000 Prado TX and my electronic turbo actuator is no longer working. I tried searching online but I don’t find the correct one that matches the pictures below. They say it’s from the original turbo but I don’t know. I don’t want to have to pay to remove the turbo just to see a part code. This is my first Prado so I’m new to this. If you also have links to buy this part replacement I’d be glad. Thanks guys

      Put your VIN into japan-parts.eu
We didn’t get the KD option of the 90 here in Aus so most are unfamiliar with it.
The actuator looks to be a electro/vacuum unit.

I tried jap eu. but it shows a similar part selection as I found on mega zip which was exactly my model code but no luck. The part it leads me to is CT16V 17201-30010 which I had bought the corespondent actuator for before uninstalling it, to realise it was incorrect. I’m glad now I know it must be a vacuum/ electric type so I can search a bit better. That might explain why we couldn’t even find a turbo driver anywhere lol. I really wish these were in Aus. I might just have to access the turbo to see exactly what it is, I don’t know if it possibly is an aftermarket turbo on it as it fits the apparent stock wire loom plug on. Plus the previous owner says it should be stock but hey. Thanks so much though, I really appreciate it. I’m such a novice

Is it a waste gate turbo or variable vane?
I thought the early KD’s had a conventional wastegate turbo, same as the KZ.
The KD in my 150 has stepper motor electric control of its variable vane turbo. Doesn’t look anything like your actuator.

This owner had a similar problem.

Reading his post, it appears your engine has a conventional waste gate turbo with a vacuum/electric actuator. I imagine it will get boost pressure from the MAP sensor.
If that's the case, it should run OK with a conventional pneumatic waste gate actuator, same as our early Aus. 1-KD's.
I can't see it throwing a fault code as there would seem to be no feedback on your actuator.

carco Hello, thanks for your reply. I does give an error code P1215 (step motor) and the check engine light is always on. Some scanners will say circuit open or something of that sort, the scanner does activate the actuator, you can hear it trying to move, even though we pulled it apart and saw water damage, cleaned it, regressed etc. I did however read through the links and learned so much on how different this system is to others. So do you still think the pneumatic motor will work?

If it has a stepper motor and not just a solenoid valve, a conventional diaphragm type wastegate actuator will have it throw error codes.
(I didn’t know it was a stepper motor, looks like a solenoid design)
Stepper motor type needs feedback so they know what position the gate is. On the VVT models, it’s a separate unit.
Yours must get boost info from the MAP sensor.
What are the symptoms? Does it make boost or is the gate always open?
How does the vacuum plumbing run?

carco the symptoms are it lacks it’s usual power, you feel it more going up a hill, on flats it has less pressure on the engine so it will move well enough, I believe the turbo is stuck open so it’s not building boost. I’ve added some pics of the inside, I know the cylinder is magnetic for sure. Also, I’m learning as I go along on how these work.

Photos don’t give me much of a clue.
Does the actual valve work? Air flow stop/start when you rotate the centre section.
