Here's a question I have often pondered... maybe you can all answer it for me

When 4WD'ing what do you guys do about airbags and the chance they might go off.

When I was up at Teewah beach the other week the undulations along the beach were quite severe in places... most you could go around, others I had a bit of fun over.

One, however had quite a steep drop off and gave us a good ol' whack when the nudge bar hit the sand... I'm sure the front was airborn for a second.

If that was something less forgiving than sand, how much of a whack would it take to set off the airbags??
For eg... the damage Ruthy did to Milo's steel bullbar in the Tassie DVD was caused by sliding down a slippery track and hitting a tree stump or something at the bottom. I would think that impact would set off the airbags in a modern vehicle.

People in the past have mentioned that they remove the airbag and the ABS fuses when going off road.

    Any thoughts?????

[not really a 90 or 120 specific question so in 'General Discussion' it goes ]
    Cheers, Leon

Snaga i think your airbag will only go off if you hit a solid brick wall at 56kph or above. If you are hitting sand dunes with that sort of impact i would hope your airbags are all go. May be able to reseach this and let you know if it is 56kph but that does ring a bell in my mind. Cheers Phil.
Ps you would also think toyota have tested there product properly.

From my understanding of airbag controllers you basically have to hit something hard enough that would otherwise casue you an injury if the bag didn't inflate. That is, with your seat belt on, the impact would need to be hard enough to make you smack your head into the steering wheel or dash.

Every now and again you see people claim that they had big accidents and the air bags didn't inflate but they weren't injured so obviously the bag/s didn't have to inflate.

I recall reading somewhere that USA airbags used to be set to go off earlier because overall a lot of people didn't wear seatbelts where as in Australia seatbelt usage is very high by world standards. Meaning that the bag deployment can be set for higher G impacts and thus avoid side effect injuries of bag deployments (like black eyes, etc)

I've had a couple of big hits off road and haven't had any airbag deployment issues. One was up in the Putty SF, I was goofing off jumping over erosion humps when one of them had a washout on the other side. I hit fairly hard on the bash plates and cross member under the vehicle. It was the sort of hit that actually physically hurt, but no airbags.

I don't jump over erosion humps any more. The 120 hits a lot harder than my Subarus used to! Might have something to do with that extra tonne of mass! ops:

the sensors use more than G force to be activated.

The crumple zones need to be crumpled for an air bag to go off..

The airbags will take a lot of force to set them off.

Most vehicles now have the microswitches mounted down on the chassis rails. Can someone with an owners manual confirm this?
If you see how far back these switches are the last thing you will be worrying about is the the airbags going off because things will be looking very bad before that happens.

There are a lot of urban myths about airbags going off by themselves or in minor impacts.

So unless you push the whole front of your car in its extremely unlikely that there will be a problem.

In actual fact they are accelerometers, not switches. They need to see a certain deceleration (G force) and other sensors in the vehicle also need to meet certain parameters "before" the airbags and belt tensioners can be deployed.
The chance of having them false when 4wding I would say is NIL. Unless you can put the vehicle into a situation that activates all required parameters. (Which normally means youve had a crash!)

Thanks for all the replys guys... I guess if the airbag deems it necessary to deploy... you probably want it too

I might have a look through the Gregory's manual and see if they talk about how the airbags work.
