  • Help me get up to speed on navigation systems

Currently have an ancient ~10 year old tom tom for road navigation
Offroad I have a small laptop with ozi and plug a gps unit into it to have offroad moving maps. This is a pain in the ass as I don't have a mount for it so I only really use it when lost. Usually just rely on good old paper maps

I think it's time for something easier to use with a big high country trip coming up over summer!

What's the go with tablets for navigation? Do they have proper GPS in them or does it only work when in areas that have phone coverage? I've seen GPS usb dongles would I need this?
I've seen some people use cheap $100 chinese 7" navigators with ozi?

Do you use tablets purely for off road use and then something else for on-road?

I'd like a tablet that I can put ozi on, don't need to plug a separate gps in and also use to navigate on the road like my tomtom. Must charge in car of course

What are some of the best options and how much $$ am I looking at? I already have all the maps so not looking for ipad with mudmaps or anything like that

    Cheers

I use my iPad for off road navigation, it works just like a regular GPS and I have used it in some of the most remote parts of the country. Just be aware you need one that takes a sim, then it will have the GPS receiver built in.

The good thing about the IPad is you have numerous options for apps to navigate by, I have tried a few and now go to my Hema 4wd app 99% of the time, including numerous high country trips.

The Hema is fine for street navigation on country roads, for the odd occasion I need navigation in a city I use the maps app.

    Cheers Andrew

Is it like a prepaid sim card for mobile phones? How much does that cost per month? or do you just need the capability but not actually putting a sim card in? It's totally offline?

And how much do the map apps cost?

You don't need a sim or a plan, just the capability, no ongoing costs.

        It's totally offline.

Apps range from $2 to $150ish, the cheaper ones might be ok if you are computer savvy ( unlike me ) and can import maps etc. the more expensive apps like Hema are all set up and ready to go.

        Cheers Andrew

1/ Yes tablets can come with a properGPS chip if you specify it when you purchase. Get one with 16Gb minimum onboard storage for quickest computer speed otherwise one with SD card but if it is reading the card it will be a slower device.
2 They will navigate without phone coverage, both Android and Apple. Android models do start around the $100 for a cheap one.
3/ You can purchase ozi software for your digital maps and off road navigation
4/ You can get (purchase) about $50 additional road navigation app like CoPilot Live Australia + NZ for on road navigation. This will store the digital maps on your android tablet and again work off grid.
5/ Most tablets should charge with a usb charger in your cigarette socket.
6/Not always, but you sort of get what you pay for. Don't be too tight with the $ as good navigation will make for a great stress free holiday at little more that the cost of a full tank of fuel in a prado.
7/ Hema navigator is the ultimate all in one on road/ off road but $$$ do not hear much negative about it
8/ I run an old Garmin suction cup to the windscreen type navigator. I can and do use a SD card with Garmin Aus topo map and that works reasonably well off road.
9/ I love my iPad with a suction cup from jay car with hema app, just a little bulky but makes navigation a breeze. Plus have all the use of the iPad for reading books on holiday and everything else.
10/ You can google and find who is selling iTunes gift cards at a discount to save money purchasing the Hema app. I have seen them up to 30% discount.

            Thanks for that info guys!

What do you think about a 1st gen nexus 7 16gb off ebay for $150? may be a bit older but is a better brand than the chinese knockoffs and fairly cheap

Only problem is it can't hold additional SD cards but I guess I could use a USB hard drive if I need it that badly

Note that you need to buy ipads with 3G capability in order to get the GPS antenna built in. This makes it more expensive than wifi versions only which do not come with a built in GPS antenna. Unlike Android tablets where pretty much all of them comes with built in GPS antennas.

The Nexus 7 1st gen for $150 is pretty expensive. I managed to get the 32GB 1st gen refurb model for low $100. So a 1st gen 16GB model should be less than that. Resale value of the 2nd gen is still pretty good though due to the full HD screen and 2nd camera. But you are going towards the right direction for a 7" Android if you want to keep the costs down and have a manageable size tablet. Best to look for a 32GB tablet. Then you can add your song collection to it and stream it via bluetooth to your car's stereo.

Note that the more things you plug into the tablet will mean more clutter and more devices to keep charged up. So i wouldn't recommend extra GPS dongles or portable HDDs.

I'm not familiar with it but there's no mention of a GPS antenna and it's only 8GB storage capacity.

Memory is on the low side. There is no mention of GPS in the specifications. If this is the case then useless for navigation.

Yeah I think all the cheapies will have a fair amount of poor reviews
But for what I am using it for I think it should suffice.

Every $ I save on it I can put towards a fridge and dual battery system!

I bought an ASUS 7 inch tablet about three years ago for around $150, it has 16gb internal storage and can read a 32gb micro card. I installled Oziexplorer (android) on the internal memory and put the maps on the micro card and use a RAM mount to hold it in place.

The good thing about most tablets is the screen resolution is much better than dedicated GPS units, so direct sunlight affects them less.

My tablets sits nicely out of the way on the dash, but I have got a 90 series and the dash is less obtrusive in them.
