  • GPS speed sensor wire output from ECU, Where is it?

Hi all, I have been reading about topics on GPS installations and was wondering if anyone knows what or where can I get the speed pulse output for the gps is located on a 2005 GXL TD? I found the connector in the headunit loom but it is not connected anywhere.

Not really sure what you are after here? :?

Do you want the pulse from gearbox that gives you a speed signal for the speedo?

Maybe someone else has cottoned onto what you want.

There was also a couple posts about a month ago about the exact same topic from memory? Might be worth searching them out.

Hi All, sorry for the confusion, I have a GXL and trying to install a Navigation unit on it, last time I did this was on a TD 100 series where the speed pulse sensor input wire was tapped from the engine ECU. The 120 series GXL has the wiring harness in the head unit side but where it plugs in the dash harness the connectors were blank or no wires on it  Is there another way without going thru the gear box wiring? Maybe someone can share how they installed their built in GPS navigation.

Still don't know why you need a speed signal for gps??

Does the GPS not provide from sattelite info?

          Confused! :?

A lot of the all in one GPS units also allow DVD's to play ... and have a cut off circuit built into them to prevent the DVD being played if the vehicle is moving.

AFAIK some units won't allow the GPS settings to be alterred if the vehicle is moving.

I can only assume that the need to locate the speed sensor wire is to be able to diable this function.

I can't see any other reason for needing the speed sensor wire to use the GPS .... or maybe I'm just missing something obvious ... it happens

              Cheers

Could be, aftermarket units seem to use a signal from the handbrake though.
A friend of mine drives a Surf with factory GPS/tv which requires the handbrake on to watch TV, Can't say about inputing GPS data.

I was thinking there was some confusion and he was putting in one of those trip meter/compass displays.

                  That makes sense Mick.

If the only thing stopping you watcjing a vid was having the handbrake on then Prado owners wouldn't have a problem

I've yet to see a stock Prado handbrake actually slow the vehicle down ... or hold it on a hill

It's a cunning plan by Toyota to create new accessories..... "Genuine Toyota house brick to put behind wheel when parking on slope"

And I ask you, why do you need a secondary braking system when you have airbags??

They have a speed sensor because they also use a gyro and if the GPS loses signal (lots of trees or tunnel, carpark) then the GPS will use the speed sensor input and gyro to maintain accurate position.

Most units with DVD will have a sensor wire connected to the handbrake and will not allow DVD playback unless the handbrake is on - this is in fact how the Sahra factory unit is wired in the 200 series.

                      Easy to bypass though

the other thing i've seen on some units is that if connected to the speedo somehow, it tracks that you are still moving when you go under a tunnel and lose satellite so the mapping still gives directions

The unit I am trying to install is a genuine Toyota Sat NAv in which there are three wires that needs to be connected. From the back of the unit there is a 5 pin connector mainly 1 is PKB, 2 is IG, 3 is SPD, 4 is TEST, 5 is REV. The SPD terminal is for the pulse input so that the GPS will track and also lock your controls when you are in motion. The toyota part number for my head unit is 08662-00900.
