  • Toyota GPS SatNav

    Hi All,

It drives me nuts not being able to enter or adjust the Sat Nav while moving.
I did see a post on here that gave some override instructions but that seems to be for the later model (MP3) Sat Nav unit. Does anyone know how to do this with the earlier unit?

I know I can purchase the LOCKPICK option but I already have SoundLinQ SLi iPod Interface which works perfectly and I don't want to purchase this when I already have most of the functionality.

I haven't found anything other than the Lockpick as yet either.
But I sure would like something to override it, it's a pain in the @#$..!!!

      GPS override

      Hi

The inability for the passenger to enter destinations while the car is moving drives me #$@#! crazy as well...

I have read about the earlier model GPS allowing the override as shown in this video

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1HjA04Z6VM

I have just picked up a 2007 D4D Grande and tried the override sequence and have found that Toyota have removed this override "feature" from the newer headunits.
I have investigated how the head unit detects speed - either through GPS data changing position regularly or a wire running into the rear of the headunit from the gearbox.
I have confirmed that the head unit detects speed via the GPS position and not via a speedo wire as I am able to drive around undercover carparks and have the passenger enter destinations as if we were stopped. This was due to the fact that the GPS antenna was not receiving any satellite data.

This got me thinking that a simple switch could be added to the inbuilt GPS antenna that connects to the headunit. Once the switch was added, the passenger would be able to temporarily disable the GPS antenna, tricking the head unit into thinking that the car was stopped, and allow the passenger to enter the destination. The switch could then be thrown to re-enable the antenna and navigatation would commence as normal.

I am happy to attempt this modification, i just need to identify the GPS antenna connection on the rear of the head unit. Does someone here have a wiring diagram (or pictures... i like pictures ) of the relevant cable / area?

The antenna will have a coaxial type of cable, so that blows the simple switch idea.....

I've tried that on my '03 model and it doesn't work for me. The screen looks different too in that it doesn't have the speaker icon beside the word 'Volume' on that screen.

So if I placed something over the GPS receiver at the front of the dash while moving then I could fool the GPS and effect an override? I wonder how dense the material would need to be to block the sensor/antenna.

A small piece of sheet metal (any type) will block the RF signal from your antenna

                blw,

I know what you mean, i found this sometime ago but the cheat works for me.
You have to be sure that when going from speaker to the other corner that you touch the screen in the same place.
But who knows on your model like you said this may not be possible.

For those of us with the older 2003-2004 satnav, I have found a cheat to be able to enter addresses and access other options while on the move. I remember someone posting one for the later model units but it didn't work on mine. However this one does.
I know there was a few of us looking for something like this. 8)

NOTE: IT IS POSSIBLY ILLEGAL TO BE ABLE TO ENTER ADDRESSES ETC WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING..!! If you run off the road don't blame me.! I except no responsibility for your stupidity (and rarely my own)

This is the procedure and it cancels out as soon as the vehicle is turned off or restarted.
                  1. Press MENU
                  2. Press DVD
                  3. Press top left of screen, bottom left, top left, bottom left, bottom right to access hidden menu.
                  4. Press and hold OVERRIDE until it beeps.
                  5. Press BACK to exit. 8)

Justo, you're a legend. It works great.

Just a warning to anyone doing this.
DO NOT change the option under Loading. This apparently changes the type of DVD that the satnav reads from and screws the whole thing up and it won't boot. The solution seems to be to take apart the DVD ECU under the seat and unplug everything and try to get it to reset.

Probably best not to muck around with it eh?

Yeah I should have mentioned that messing with the other settings etc is not a good idea unless you know what you are doing. I had a look through the menus and decided its best left alone.. Just hit the override and get outa there.. 8)

Does anyone know if you disconnect the battery, will the Toyota GPS unit retain any entered POI's and addresses? I can't seem to find anything about it in the manual?

                            Toyota GPS

                            Hi all,

Does anyone know if the firmware on the Toyota system can be upgraded to allow entry of destinations by GPS coordinates? A lot of the off-road information of rest sites and points of interest are now given in eastings and northings and it is a pain not being able to enter them or even see your current coords.

                            Thanks.

The newer unit does this but the older units don't. There is no way of upgrading them unfortunately.
