  • I'm pretty impressed with the look of the forward fold campers coming onto the market now. I like the idea of the lounge area built in like a caravan but without the full cost and weight. We also found with our last camper trailer that the 4 foot climb from the ground to on top of the trailer to get in and out of bed was annoying so the forward fold ones solve that problem too. There's a pretty nifty one in the latest unsealed 4x4 from ezytrail that I like the look of although I'd want to do a lot more research to see what other options are around.

There are about 5 or 6 identical trailers on the market like this and I've got one which I regret buying. Ten minute awning setup my arse. To set up the awning properly there are 3 uprights plus 7 crossbars that you need to interlock. And then all the heavy canvas walls to zip up plus the toilet/shower unit to attach to that. Of course you don't have to do any of that but if you want to get out of the sun, wind and the rain you'll have to. It'll be ok for you younger blokes but we're getting too long in the tooth for that caper. Have mine a year, used it 3 times and may never use it again and thinking of selling it already.

Yeah, I thought it looked like a fair bit of effort to put all the awning up. For the most part though, we wouldn't bother with the awning. We've got the ostrich wing on the car for a sun shade and for the boys to put their swags under. We tend not to sit in one spot for long but move around a bit when we camp. Is it still as quick as it seems to set up if you don't put the awning on?

Once you have it open you still have 6 or 7 poles to put in and then 3 more for each window shade you want to prop up to keep the air flow. That's also the reverse to do when packing up. I wanted to go with a Jayco Outback or similar but these were the only campers short enough to fit in my garage as I've no yard to put it in, not even street parking.

Funny you mention that, I was dead keen on the jayco's too until I saw these. I might do a bit more research at the caravan and camping show this year. Thanks for the advice.

            • I have just fitted a SupaPeg 3m awning to the side of the Tvan. This is an alternative to the canvas annexe. While the annexe is up in about 15mins this set up with the triangular sail takes barely a couple of minutes. Set up in the carport at the moment and if it looks to be fine tomorrow I will set up properly outside. Add to that the 3m pop up and/or the 3m side and end walls and it is very simple. BIL bought a hard floor camper a month ago or so and they too discovered that the annexe/awning was not the simple task they were led to believe. With the Tvan you can pull the hatch down to complete connections with the annexe but BIL camper is at full height so even a couple of 6'ers had to stand on trestles.

                        I have a Mars Camper.

It was relatively cheap and simple and not adorned by bling and things I did not needed.

I wanted a light camper that one person could easily set up and pack up.

It has been from Melbourne to Uluru via Flinders Rangers, Arkaroola, Iga Watta, Leigh Creek, Oodnadatta, Dalhousie, Mt Dare, Finke and Kings Canyon. And back.

It followed the Prado and we averaged about 10.5 lt/100k.

With those pissy little mud flaps on the back of the Prado we shot blasted the front of the camper where the stone screen didn't protect and destroyed both shocks on the camper. Didn't seem to notice any difference in the way it towed even with the shocks looking lik they had been hit with a 12 gauge.

It handles the high speed sections of the Oodnadatta and the unbelievable corregations of the road into Mt Dare with the only failure being the pressure water pump.

In very very very wet conditions and at high speed we got some water into tub which has now all been resealed.

                        Hope that helps,

                        S.

                        • I bought for less than $10k a very well used Campomatic rear fold hardfloor. Independent Alko rubber suspension, shocks, Ok canvas. Undoo 2 clips, flip it over and it is up- 30 seconds top. Strong ,comfortable bed, slide out kitchen, space for 2 gas bottles and 3 jerries. Tough as- last year it it did the Gary Junction Rd from Alice to Marble Bar, Duncan and Buchanan hwy back again, Davenport Ranges, Plenty Hwy. No problems other than machine gunned shocks [ which will be replaced and protected before this year's trip across the Anne Beadell.] The point is buy a good used Aussie-made OFF ROAD camper if you are going to do the tough stuff of outback dirt roads. You don't need to spend $30-50 k on a new one. Replace wheel bearings before a trip and regularly check that they are not loose and enjoy the savings! OH ,and whatever you get cover your rear screen to save it from rebounding rocks!

                          • Hi guys,
After many years of tenting I've decided to bite the bullet and go for a camper trailer. Whilst I have been enticed by the Chinese made campers because of the price, I'm really interested in the Aussie Jay crusher model. All Aussie products and can't seem to find any bad reports. Anyone got one or have any knowledge of them?
