  • Cooking gear and setup

    G'day all,
Looking to start something on what/how people cook out bush and what they bring to do so.
I myself like to stick to the traditional BBQ meat festival while out camping with maybe some onions to make it feel a little bit semi-healthy.
In regards to what I bring I have a plastic crate (in the process of making a wooden one to fit perfectly in my drawers) which has 4x plates, 4x bowls, 2x mugs, set of cutlery, plastic cups, salt/pepper, oil, coffee, tea, sugar, chopping board, large knife, aluminium foil, baking paper, tongs, flipper thing, tea towel, chux, washing detergent and a wooden spoon.
To cook on I either have the fire plate or a gas cooker depending on fire restrictions. Somewhere in my kit I also have a 2L billy and a medium sized pot.
Interested to hear what others do and maybe pick up some ideas of my own

We take the webber baby q (with hot plate), one of those little gas burners that take an aerosol can style gas bottle, wok, billy, plates, bowls, cutlery, barbie mate, wooden spoon thingy, cutting board and sharp knife. Sometimes we also take a camp oven, if we take the camp oven we also take a small loaf tin. We cook everything from spaghetti, BBQ, roasts, currys, and most things in between. We also have a dream pot which is good, and depending on room it goes too. Usually it's either the dream pot or the camp oven, they take each other's spot.

Depending on who is coming I take: The Weber Baby Q, Butane stove (the "dangerous one"), 26cm Fry pan, a small pot, 2x plates, cups, mugs, bowls, cutlery, a stay sharp knife, tongs, flipper thingy, a plastic spoon. I recently landed a camp oven which will come along when required. If its just me I leave the Weber behind - its big and rattles a lot.
I also make sure I carry some chux cloths, plenty of paper towel, dish washing detergent, hand sanitiser and if I remember a tea towel. Everything is packed into a plastic roller box - sometimes with the non perishable food, again depending on what Im taking.
I take either my little fold up aluminium table (for just me) or our large blow moulded trestle table if the better half comes along.

I REALLY need to get my self a billy too...

Hey spilsy, a old t-shirt will fix the webber rattles right up. Slip the grill plate inside the shirt then put it back in the BBQ, close the lid being careful to trap the shirt between the lid and the base, no more rattles

Great suggestion on the T-shirt. I must try that.

Genius. Last time I used my fire starting newspaper to kill the noise...This only works if you don't burn the entire paper because you are a very slight pyromaniac...

I've got a question for you guys that is related. When camping for say a week or more, both in private and public camping spots, when you travel away from your campsite do you leave all your cooking gear etc set up or do you pack it away and take it with you?

I'm in two minds about this dilemma.

Leave it all set up. The tiger snake in the pantry takes care of any security issues.

And a big sticker somewhere with "I root & I shoot" usually helps scare them off....

I'd move my trunk monkey into the pantry. I think it would have more of an effect.

I, depending on the duration I plan to go away for, usually leave most things set up - or stacked close to the car if I'm walking. I have found that generally people don't steal other peoples camping stuff...i think its one of those unwritten laws.

                      this made me laugh!

'very slight' pyromaniac - remind me of the saying of being a 'bit' pregnant.

p.s arent we all very slight pyros?? I know I am...

                        I hope that's you're a slight pyro, not a bit pregnant

I like to burn things, does that make me a slight pyro too???

Yes...but I take it to another level. If there is a fire - I poke it. If there is something that can be burned - I burn it. If there isn't a fire - I make a fire just so I can poke it and burn things.
