  • I've seen Pajero and CT go over Ivanhoe Crossing at Kununurra in similar fashion complete with little kids on board. The water pressure pushed the CT over the edge and the Pajero went after it.

    • Water weighs 1000kg/cubic metre. When a vehicle stalls in water, the water's momentum is transferred to the car. For each 30cm the water rises, 226 kg of lateral force is applied to the car. For each 30cm the water rises up the side of the car, the car displaces 680kg of water. In effect, the car weighs 680kg less for each 30cm the water rises. Most cars will float in just 60cm of water.

60cm of rushing water will float most large vehicles

15 centimetres of rushing water is enough to knock a person over.

Such a shame. Got some great childhood memories of us rattling along the dirt out to Glen Helen for the weekend.......

          • Do they still have those home made traffic signs - slow down - sharp curve ahead - gate ahead - close gate. Last time i was there a rental Pajero disobeyed all of those signs by speeding around a bend and crashing through the gates.

For Cahills at this time of year I hazard a guess at no. There is a barrier with a road closed sign that also specifies the fine (few thousand from memory) that gets locked across the entry/exit. Although I believe it gets cut regularly.

Given the remoteness, the fact they feed on long horns and the fact the locals don't want to kill them it doesn't surprise me. For the record, the fishing spot is also the local swimming pool for the young locals who tempt fate regularly on the rope swing........

I would suggest not, most of the vehicles that don't leave the area don't seem to be registered past the initial 12 months. Not too many policemen out that way either and the community land sizes are 2-2.5 days travel north to south.

No. Most rentals have specific clauses that limit off road liabilities. Others that cross the road in flood would be deemed to be putting their vehicle at risk by exceeding its limits and, therefore, would be in breach of their policy. Those that deliberately try and cross when the road is official closed will clearly have no cover as the damage/loss resulted from an illegal act.
