  • Prado Kakadu stolen!

    Hi all,

sadly I must report my 12 month old Kakadu was stolen while I was on holiday.

it was at an airport parking facility in Melbourne, one I’d used many times. Sadly they had a break in, and likely my car was taken on 27 Oct. unfortunately this wasn’t discovered until the 4th of November when I returned.

police and insurance are in the works.

silver pearl, no mods, barely 29000 on the clock when I last saw my car.

just in case anyone comes across one in their travels!

going to look into car trackers once this is all sorted out.

thankfully I hadn’t pulled the trigger on the upgrades yet!

Got to wonder how the parking business was not aware of missing vehicles surely after a break in they have some means of checking their customers vehicle numbers.

Sorry to hear that mate, years ago in the UK we had cars broken into a few times and once stolen and it's a really horrid feeling.

Yeah, a few people have asked me that question...

Did the police officer give any feedback if the airport parking area had a high hit rate for car thefts. The airport staff wouldn’t admit to anything because they wouldn’t want that kind of negative publicity to surface. I bet thieves operate there a fair bit.

How was it stolen? Was Key left with parking station? CCTV Footage? Etc.. Some missing bits here. Most of the parking sites in Melbourne airport and nearby have CCTV. Also nil info on rego, or discerning characteristics, so no one would be able to tell it from any other Silver Prado on the road.

sorry, yes key was still in the key safe. CCTV shows it leaving in a hurry in the middle of the night. Blasting through their boom gate. No footage of them getting in to it though.

rego was AUF143. Who knows how long it was for though. No other discerning characteristics.

Police were standard selves. No real info other than, sometimes they turn up sometimes they don’t. It’s info gets sent out via radio and email to police as a “keep a watch for”. Not much else really.

apparently one of the talk back radio stations did a piece on the ‘secure’ airport parking places and the number of stolen vehicles. I got the impression the place I use has lost none to very few cars over the years, and certainly none recently. The staff seemed perplexed as to what to do and what happened, lots of disbelief. But very helpful. My family has been using them for 20 years!

I might be naive but how the hell did they get it started with the key still being in the safe? I would have thought a good quality safe would have provided enough RF protection for the key.

Interesting, so how do you start a Prado without the fob/key?
