  • Increased power and torque for 2021 Prado imminent

Given that the 2021 Hilux will receive a mild bump in power and torque (https://performancedrive.com.au/2021...8-diesel-0616/) it is entirely likely that the Prado will also receive the same upgrades.

However, I'm more keen to see a turbo petrol engine in the Prado as an alternative power plant. I'm tipping the yet-to-be-released for 20201 Lexus 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine making 237 kW (318 hp) may debut in the Prado.

C'mon Toyota, give us a couple of decent troublefree, fuel efficient engine choices for the Prado!

If the 2.8L diesel comes out with more power and torque, I wonder if it will be a re-engineered version of a 1GD motor or a "Toyota tune" of the 1GD motor?
If it happens to be the latter, perhaps existing 1GD owners (like me) could acquire the "tune" for their motors? Something to think about.

I highly doubt it will be a software upgrade - have a little think about it - why would you buy a new one if it was just a software update... Tojo are in the business of selling new cars

I think it is highly possible for the performance increase to be a software/programming change as the engines are at present not stressed.
As for updating software for existing engines... it will never happen IMO. The legalities of changing an engines programming is a nightmare and something I cannot see a manufacturer doing unless they absolutely have too, think about the time line in getting the DPF program changed and then supplied. If a higher output version of the 2.8 does eventuate I would think Toyota will talk about upgraded build quality, perhaps piston & valve material changes to justify the higher outputs now without sacrificing reliability, that might possibly be true or possibly smoke and mirrors.
I work in the marine industry where we have the same base engine with several different outputs e.g. a 2.5 L diesel produces from 100 kw to 165 kw with no hardware change and the Yanmar 4LV range 110 kw to 185 kw, an engine which looks a lot like the 2.8

Wouldn't surprise me, we all know the TT V8 in the 200 landcruiser is YANMAR based too..

Yanmar released the marine models well after they were released by Toyota, perhaps a joint engine venture but I think they were developed by Toyota due to the economies of scale in the automotive industry compared to the marine industry, most marine engines have a automotive core engine. I am aware of only two marine specific diesel engines, well in the high rpm range anyway, not counting low rpm ship engines.

                  Not looking good:

                  https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-new...e-wont-make-it

The Toyota LandCruiser Prado's 2.8-litre diesel engine will miss out on the performance boost coming to the updated HiLux, with Toyota confirming there is currently "no plan" to update the off-road SUV's outputs.

Makes no sense to me, especially when the Fortuner is likely to receive the power upgrade:

Toyota seem to be pretty in tune with the preferences of the vast majority. Sales of the 1GR-FE V6 were terrible, despite it being a fantastically reliable, powerful engine that used a couple of litres extra per 100kms and didnt melt pistons or need engine replacements. So I wouldn't bet on any changes or upgrades to the 2.8 until Toyota is forced to make them by emissions regulations.

Apparently the 2.8 can be tuned to make 186hp at the wheels with a tune and exhaust: https://www.justdieselperformance.co...dated-2019.pdf
thats about 70% over stock, so over 210kW at the flywheel.

The old 3.0 could be tuned out to well over 300 hp.

Just visited a local dealer today as we are weighing up our options for towing a new van that will be around 2700kg and over our current 2500 kg limit.
Any way the dealer showed me a “for Toyota dealer eyes only” document that said that builds from August 2020 will have an upgrade that includes the 150kw / 500Nm motor similar to the recently announced Hilux and will on the GX model that we spoke about have some tech upgrades like rain sensing wipers and other tech things and there will be a new brown colour which he showed me on the screen.
New 2015 150s GX 5 seater with floor mats, towbar and a big wish list
Previously a 2004 120s 1KZ GX silver manual with stuff
before that a 1996 RV6 90S with lots of gear
