  • Loud Generator - Robin Motor

    Hi,

I have a very loud generator that if i was to take camping would cause other campers, even it they were camped hundreds of meters away, to come up to my camp site and punch me in the face.

Does anyone have any experience in how to modify a Robin engine to reduce the noise?

    Cheers,

Ive got probably the same yellow Robin engine in my 3.5kW caged generator. Great genny but Ive tried adding a extra muffler to no avail. I think they are inherrantly noisy as they were designed for tradesmen who start at 7 in the morning to let the neighbors know they were on site.

Yeah I had a 7 kVA Crommelin with a Robin engine that I scored a few years back from working in the industry. Off loaded it to a work mate for a carton for this reason. Bought a new 2.2 kVA Honda instead

Nothing more annoying than a bloody genny at a peaceful campsite. With current Solar and Battery technology why do you need them? I've got 400W with a on the roof 260Ah battery that comfortably runs fridges etc even on shady days. And if it's for an a/c, as at one of my recent campsites, why come camping?

I don't use mine for camping at all.

We all have different circumstances and live in different places.

Living in Darwin with infant children who need to sleep during the day during the buildup with temps and humidity through the roof, means that if you want to go camping at all you need to do something to help them sleep, or we would just not go camping.

You changing the topic to talk up your setup mock others isnt helpful.

We camp in the Northwest of WA in summer, and have done with young kids, so I understand the issue of temperatures.

Having camped right next to a very noisy genny for a week in what could have been an idilic location has possibly coloured my opnion.

Finding quiet solutions to generate power is on topic, using emotive language to troll is not.

living in Darwin i would have though the kids would be acclimatised & a fan would be sufficient - or is the Air Con on at home permanently?

As far as the noisy genny goes,Id assume its the exhaust that is generating the noise? can you not adapt a bigger muffler? Or is is mechanical noise coming from the actual rotating parts ?

The robin motors are just noisy, as mentioned I tried adding a extra mufler and trying a different type but a lot of the noise seems to emanate from the body.

After having a power outage the other week and having the generator going for a couple of hours i have come to the conclusion that it has to go. Will sell it and look for something quieter.

Is something around 2kva enough for a couple of fridges, freezer and some fans?
