Thanks Mark. I'm definitely keen to do this trip and if I can do it without upgrading the suspension, I've got a much better chance.

But you will be trying to fit as many mods as possible beforehand to help ensure you and your rigs survivability right?Originally posted by talk2tiny View PostThanks Mark. I'm definitely keen to do this trip and if I can do it without upgrading the suspension, I've got a much better chance.
Being in the Simpson with a standard car and road tyres is asking for trouble. You are totally reliant on the goodwill of others to sort you out everytime. You should be aiming to be as self reliant as possible which lets everyone else enjoy their trip a bit more.
Although Mark got a couple of show room cars through, you should read up on other forums on just how f%$#ed up your car can become out there.Malcom

Going East to West is harder than going the other way due to the shape of the dunes, so you would be doing the harder crossing without the group and the easier crossing with the group.Originally posted by Dusty74 View PostI'm keen, just trying to work out how I'd join in coming from Cairns. Two options, go the long way round to Mr Dare via Alice or head straight for Birdsville and cross the Simo to meet you guys at Mt Dare, turn around and do it again!
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Dusty
Depending on time if I were coming from Cairns I would head across the bottom of the gulf to Normanton, head out to Lawn Hill for a day or 2 then any one of a number of options to get you to Alice and down to Mount Dare.
I have absolutely no idea where life will be taking me in the next 12 months, but I would also been keen to come along if things work out.
Whats you thoughts on trailers? I know a lot of people frown on the idea but I think much of that has to do with people without experience trying to tow them across.

Thanks Malcolm, yes I do intend to do as many as I can. I know how frustrated I get rescuing other idiots who come out unprepared. Since I posted my earlier question I've done a bit more reading and it sounds like a lift at least should be considered mandatory. I think it seems to be a question of depending on luck and the good will of others as opposed to depending on a well set up rig. I think I'd prefer the latter so it'll just come down to how well I can get set up before the time comes I guess.

Hmmm Blkd4d, a post at 2.53 pm yesterday must've been while we were trying to find some more tracks that were open... Perhaps while we were pondering the closed gate @ Curtis track! Good to see you can't keep away from PP! Definetly some more discussions today about the Simpson trip, may be a viable option..150 with stuff bolted on!

Andrew you are right, but we did it East to west last month. Frankly with the cut up track on the Western side, East to West worked well for us.Originally posted by AJ120 View PostGoing East to West is harder than going the other way due to the shape of the dunes, so you would be doing the harder crossing without the group and the easier crossing with the group....

Personally I wouldn't attempt a crossing on my own, You are a long way from help out there and calling a tow is prohibitively expensive. - Just my 2cGreg - 08 D4D Prado,
Some trips done - Cape York, Fraser Island, Simpson Desert / Central Aust, Vic High Country.

Better make sure MLC goes tail end Charlie, we don't want any random 4ft deep holes appearing on the steeper dunes.Originally posted by AJ120 View PostI better make sure I can come as well then, your gunna need someone to tow you over all thsoe dunes

I will bring my trailer Phil, that way you guys can keep up if you try really hard
I have a large number of second hand cable ties retrieved from my tail shaft and tent if anyone needs them, and I also have a large quantity of vegemite retrieved from my door handle if anyone gets hungry. Finally, I have some dried loctite retrieved from my tyre valve caps if that has any use also...
